We have had a PS2 for a few years now. Probably have 20-30 games, some of which were bought new in the $50 range. Now DS14 wants to sell it all on Ebay and buy an Xbox 360. He is convinced he can sell the PS2 and all the games and make about $400-500. I am not convinced of that fact. Then we would have to buy all new games for the Xbox. One of the reasons we bought the PS2 is the fact that it also serves as a DVD player, which we did not have at the time. I know zero about the Xbox and game costs. He tells me the games are actually a little less than PS2 games. Can anybody who has made this switch give me some advice? Thanks. Kellie

Well I can pretty much assure you that he will not get that kind of money for his system and games. Once a new system comes in PSlll , the resale on the old one goes way down as do the value of the games. We upgraded to a PSlll the first of the year and while the system is higer cost, we could keep all the games from it for PSlll. in fact we ended up keeping the old PSll system to take places like the beach or a chuch lock in as I do not allow him to move the PSlll and he really was not going to get that much for it.

Be careful when purchasing a Xbox360. We bought one and our friend bought one at Christmas so we could share games. Both of ours have broken at one time. They are not made very well. Also, research what games they offer. It seems there are not as many games for kids. I would now purchase the Wii over the Xbox360.

We have both systems. Both can be used to play DVDs. So, you don't have to worry about that. Some of the games are comparable in price, but generally speaking the 360 ones are more expensive even when purchased used. You will be able to make some money back on your PS2 games, but nowhere near what you paid for them. I don't think you'll make much on the console itself.

My only real advice to you is to research the games before making the switch. Make sure that there are enough games that your son is interested in AND you are willing to let him play. The 360 is definitely for the older set. Also, if he wants to play live you will need to factor in that expense.

OH! I can't believe I almost forgot about this! Do a search for problems surrounding the 360. Apparently there are/were a lot of them. Ours crashed and had to be replaced after only having it a few months. If you do decide to purchase it, get the extended warranty.

I would be shocked if he could get close to that kind of money for a PS2.

We have not "made the switch" but we do own both PS2 and XBox360. I can tell you that the games are NOT cheaper for the XBox360. In general I find the games to be more expensive. The XBox360 will play DVDs but you need to purchase some separate equipment I believe (we have a DVD player so we don't use it for that purpose).

I would caution on making the switch depending on what type of games he likes to play. PS2 has many more (and more impressive) RPG type games and XBox360 has many more (and more impressive) shooter type games. I will say that XBox360 has much better graphics if you have an HDTV. From what I've heard the graphics aren't any better if you don't have HD but I don't know.

I just asked my son (11) about the whole DVD thing. I was told that the cheaper ones may not play the DVDs, but we bought the more expensive one so ours does. :confused3

To everyone - thanks for all the info. This is exactly what I was looking for -- and exactly what I was thinking! He hasn't mentioned this to me in about a week, so I will keep tabs on this thread until he brings it up again and then whip it out. Kellie

We have the 360 (or should I say DH has a 360). In fact, DH, DS & FIL are all downstairs right now playing together :goodvibes

Yes the games are very $$$ but there are a few nexflix type services that you can rent from. So far DH is very happy with Gamefly. If he or DS ends up liking a game after 1 month we buy it but usually a newer & hotter game comes out so off it goes. I also like the service because sometimes the hype is better than the game and at $60 each I prefer spending $15/month for a dud and a better replacement than $60 for a dud. Every so often a game is super hot and we have to wait but this happens infrequently.

Blockbuster also has games but usually don't have many of the hot ones in stock.

FYI, the family bought me the super girlie/Mom friendly Viva Pinata for X-mas and I love playing it:thumbsup2

PS about the DVD playing. We had a Playstation 2 and it was replaced 2 times. I just thought we weren't taking care of it. At first we were using the 360 to watch movies BUT I (really DH) ran across a big gamer website that mentioned the fact that the lasers on the games are not made to hold up to constant DVD usage. Considering the high price of the system we did 2 things #1, bought a $50 DVD player from Walmart which is just fine for my Romantic Comedies and #2, we bought the extended warranty.

FYI, DH is a computer geek:) who I love desperately.

Good Luck with whatever you do.

Well, I had pretty much already made up my mind that this change was too much money for no real benefit . . . and then DH found reports of 47% failure rates for the Xbox hardware . . . and then came yesterday's news reports that Microsoft will pay $1B (that's billion with a B) for Xbox repairs. It's in our local newspaper today and also on the CNN.com web site today (July 6). So, my mind is even more made up! Thanks for everyone's thoughts. Kellie

Our XBOX 360 just died as well (ring of death). Thankfully dh is a computer nerd and was able to pull it apart and add a fan to it to cool it off. It's still in pieces until he can figure out how to make a case for it. What a POS! Microsoft couldn't care less too. They got their money. Grrr

I am so glad I read this thread. My DH and I were just out this am looking at the PS3 vs the 360. We too have (2) xbox's with 40+ games. My DH and DS (7) played "online" while he was deployed to Texas for 2 years- thus 2 of them.
My DS will turn 8 at the end of the month and wanted the latest Halo- we cant decide between switching to PS3 or just going with X-box.

The info here does tend to sway me. Question though?? Does anyone know for sure- will xbox games play in the 360 or are they totally incompatible?
