My DD10 wants to run for Student Council Secretary. She is in 5th grade. Does anyone have some suggestions for her speech? Last year, the speeches that kids enjoyed the most had some humor to them with funny catch phrases or jokes. Any suggestions are appreciated.

TIA

When I was in 5th grade, my friend Kim ran for Student Council. We spent the weekend making signs to put up around the school, and came up with...

"VOTE FOR KIMBO, SHE'S NO BIMBO!!!" :scared1: :woohoo: :rotfl:

Yeah, I though a bimbo was just sort of an airhead, we didn't realize that it was inappropriate for school. I was SO scared when they called us into the office...
:rotfl:

Umm, that probably won't help...I guess just check the signs before she leaves the house! : D

Two years ago, in 5th grade, my daughter won for vp of the student council. I think her main platform was changing the school lunch menu.

Just make sure your dd practices her speech, has some good ideas, and speaks in a clear, loud voice so that everyone can hear. My dd told me that so many kids just said "please vote for me for......" and didn't have any ideas as to what they were going to do if they won or why they thought they should be elected.

The kids want to hear what your dd is going to DO as secretary. Don't worry too much about the catch phrases and funny speeches.

I thought it was helpful when i was a senior to run for class secretary when the only other connie in the school was running for junior class secretary too!!

Worked out well, double the signs for advertising.

Hanving a sense of humor helps, if you can pull it off, so practice. Some are better at humor than others. Practice, practice practice.
May want to have a short talk about sometimes people get more loud cheering than others during speech time. Maybe have her teech her friends some cheer to chant at the end of her speech. Or just encourage then to cheer and clap afterwards, so she has some people in her corner.

My eldest did this a couple of years back and she worked on the main thing being "no one gets left behind"- in that she went for more than anti-bullying but went for the whole friendship stop in the playground, befriend a new kid, that type of thing- it was really appreciated i think because secretly every kid feels a bit lonely at times in school and even those who don't got thinking about what it would be like to be the lonely kid.

I ran for student Council in Junior high and High school. You have to use something that will make people remember you. My initials were "MM", one year I made posters saying vote for M&M and threw bags of M&M's candy out during my speech. The next year I did Mickey Mouse (my love) and came on stage with Mickey Mouse ear's on. :rotfl2: (Only a true Disney nut would do this, LOL)
I got teased, but I won the election! Best of luck to your dd, it is a great thing to get into. I made lots of friends that way and helped the school!

A kid in my high school ate a goldfish during his speech. He won. The next year the principal sat with in arms distance of all giving their speeches and the kids were told NO comedy acts, just a speech.
