We have been fighting colds this past week because the weather keeps changing here. Well, my 2 little ones dont like anything even mildy warm to drink so I have been trying to find something NON medicine to help them. Anyone have any suggestions? I havent taken them to the doctor because they will just hand me some dimatap, robitussin, and saline for their nose (like they always do) and send me home. So yeah any suggestions appreciated.

Have you tried setting up a humidifier in the house? Help to keep the moisture in the air a little better... They do make some that you can put some Vicks vapo stuff in to help with scratchy throats.

Also, do they take baths or showers? I can't remember the name of the company, but someone out makes eucalyptus (sp??) shower tablets that you put in the shower and they melt while releasing nose, throat, and chest soothing smelly stuff.

I'll give our humidifier a go. Might help w/ LOs random bloody noses too (2x today already his nose has just started bleeding).

They are still in baths as the shower scares both of them. I think when I go to the grocery store tomorrow I'll look for the J&J vapor bath for babies.

Just thought of something... you could still use the shower tabs. Have them sit in the bathroom for a story or some down time and just let the shower run over the tab. That way they'll still get the benefit of the tablet without the water!

Also, can you put some blankets and towels under the mattress at the head of the bed to raise the angle a bit? May help with some of the drainage. We've done that before when our DS was really little (before pillows) and by putting the rolled towels under the mattress we didn't have to worry about things shifting and possibly smothering him.

Good luck!

We rub the Vicks vapo rub on our necks and chest when we have a sore throat...put a blanket on to cover up the Vicks and let the warmth sooth the throat and chest.

My 19 m/o son had a cough that lingered for weeks. The pediatrician said it would be okay to give him a 1/2 tsp. of "dark" honey (which I think might be clover honey?). Haven't tried it on him yet but I am going to keep some in the house for next time...because I am sure there will be a NEXT time :sad2:.

Also saw something at Whole Foods called Runny Rhino cold relief pops. The ingredients include zinc, pectin and vitamin c. They come in different flavors and are for children 2 yrs. and older. Again, haven't tried them myself but they are supposed to help with coughs and sore throat relief.

When I was younger (and I still do it) my mom used to give me dill pickle juice for a sore throat/ congestion. The vinegar is soothing, and the salt helps break up congestion. It always made me feel better. Just make sure you give him extra water to counteract the extra salt.

DD's been fighting a cold and sore throat too. We've been giving her Edy's Fruit bars which she LOVES! They're yummy & cold! We run a cool mist humidifier in her room and use the saline drops when she's stuffy.

Thanks everyone. I'm so tired of drugging my kids w/ cold meds so I needed something new. I'm going to try some of these. Hopefully they will be well enough soon to eat something other than jello.

Technically no pediatrician should be recommending Dimetapp or Robitussin for children under 6 years old. Current guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics discourage use of such over the counter remedies for children under 6. The recommendations include the use of a cool mist humidifier and saline nasal washes. I know this doesn't sound very helpful and 2 sick little ones can be frustrating, but it worked back in the day! A PP recommended honey and this should help soothe a sore little throat too!

Hope they recover quickly, I know how difficult it can be to have 2 sick at one time.

My doctor recommended yogurt. He said the coolness would be soothing.

We gave DD yogurt this past week too and we put Del Monte no sugar added fruit cups in the refridgerator and gave those to her too. Basically, we tried to give her as many cold, healthy foods as possible.

At night we use a plug-in waterless vaporizer when DS is sick. It's sold near the vaporub. I checked with our pedi nurse who agreed it's fine. I like it better than the vicks because it's neater and DS can't eat it or get it in his eyes.

There is also a fruit cup (not actually fruit but fruit juice) that is meant to be frozen. I DID give my DS these for his sore throat and he loved them. Also felt good knowing he was getting some vitamin c somewhere in there. They are in the canned fruit aisle, unfrozen.
