OT-scooting babies

At about what age does a baby normally learn to scoot, as in pushing their legs and arms like they're trying to crawl. I've been looking through my books, etc and I don't see anything about this.
My four month old has been around a crawling 8 month old this week and she has all of a sudden decided to start scooting across the floor. Is this normal? I just wasn't expecting this to happen until after 6 months. She JUST learned how to roll over a little over a week ago. I thought it would be a while before she did anything else.

According to my Dr Sears Baby Book, in the 4th month (which would be 3 months old to the next month) they lift their heads, rest on elbows, and roll from tummy to side. And in the 5th month, where your 4 month old is now, they will roll from tummy to back, assume push-up position with chest and part of tummy off floor, and wiggle a few feet forward.

So it sounds like she's just about perfect!

And it's really cool that she learned to do that from watching an older baby. Her brain is growing, too!

Mine was speed crawling by 5 months... seriously, so fast that I could barely catch him!!!

Mine didn't start scooting and crawling till around 7 months but he was not a fan of tummy time so getting him to be on his tummy long enough to practice was tough. He didn't seem to have much interest in getting around until he watched his cousin (4 months older) crawling and then he started. He watched her "walking" on her knees and within a day was doing it himself. He was cruising and only taking a few steps without holding on until he saw her running around our house on his first birthday and the next day he was taking more steps and was much more determined to get around without holding on. He actually REALLY took off last December on his first trip to Disney at age 14 months. We went with a very timid walker and came back with a speed demon tearing around the house and climbing the furniture. For him it was definately a case of "monkey see monkey do"...he didn't seem all that interested in doing things until he saw his cousin and then it was suddenly a must learn so he could keep up.

All of mine started scooting at three months and crawling around 6. Sounds like your baby is right on schedule!

WOW! I guess I missed that somewhere. I just wasn't expecting this until later. I guess I better get my running legs ready!! It won't be long before I will need them!

Every child is different so I wouldn't worry unless things were off to an extreme.

When DS was 6 months he wasn't crawling yet and screamed whenever I put him on his belly. I figured he was doing great otherwise so I left the kid alone and hugged & kissed him all day Then the pediatrician said his muscles would be weak and he'd be delayed, I was upset and DH gave me a hard time about it but still the baby screamed. Then at 8 months he pulled himself up and started walking... he skipped right over crawling and never did it unless he was dragging himself over to something to pull himself up to walk.

So if you REALLY think something is off call your pediatrician even if its only to put your mind at ease. Otherwise enjoy your baby as long as you can... it all goes by way too fast
