DD 6 was getting off the bus today & the driver shut the door of the bus on her back pack. She was stuck to the side of the door while her back pack was still in the bus. Thank god my DH saw thw whole thing unfold from our front porch,he ran after the bus yelling until the driver saw him & stopped. It took @75 feet for him to stop the bus & for DD to be released from the door. Luckily in all the craziness she stayed calm & picked up her feet, and held on to her back pack straps till the bus came to a stop. Dh took her to the doctor & she doesn't have a scratch on her, although that wouldn't have been the case if she had left her feet down or tried to take her backpack off to get loose. She is still pretty shaken up, and may be sore tomorow but I hate to think of how much worse this could have been.
I just wanted to share so maybe you guys could talk to your kids about what to do in this situation. I never thought I needed to tell my daughter what to do if she was trapped & the bus was dragging her down the road, luckily she is a smart girl and used common sense to keep herself safe.

Holy cow

I agree with PP what a smart little girl you have. I am glad that she was not hurt.

OMGosh I am so glad your dd is okay. Whatever was the bus driver thinking closing the door before the child was completely out. Sounds like the bus driver needs to go back to training. Did you talk to the supervisor about it?? If not I would be calling them in the morning. My dds' bus drivers won't close the doors until the kids are waiting to cross the street so they are sure the kids are away from the door. Our kids have also been told by the bus safety team that if they drop something while walking in front of the bus they are to leave it because if they bend down the driver cannot see them.

Thank you for sharing this incident as it reminds us that we really do have to teach our kids to expect the unexpected and how to handle the situations.

This needs to be reported to the bus company. It rates way up there with the cases (some recent ones in the Boston area) where the driver parked the bus at the end of the run and a kid was still inside and the outside temperature was 90 degrees or zero degrees. Or it fits the definition of a pedestrian-vehicle collision.

I have no words right now...I am shocked!:scared1:

I am so glad your dd wasn't hurt, she's a very smart girl! I would be on the phone right now making sure that bus driver never drives another kid anywhere! How are you supposed to put her on the bus again without being afraid for her safety? :sad2:

Some angel was with your daughter today. I'm so happy she is okay.

Please, please, please make sure someone is notified about this. The bus driver needs serious training. About 15 yrs ago, the same thing happened to my friend's little sister. She was getting off of the school bus in front of her house. Unfortunatley, no one was able to react quickly enough and the bus drove off. She was dragged under the wheels and died immediatlly. The poor children on the bus were screaming for the driver to stop. I'm so thankful that this didn't happen to your child, but the driver should be reminded that these things can and do happen.

you can bet your butt that I would be on the phone with the busing company first thing in the am. That driver should be reprmanded or fired. Thank God your dd is ok.

Thank you for sharing your story. How horrifying that must have been to witness! I hope your dd will be OK. I'm sure that really must have scared her! I agree that the bus company must be talked to about this. Hopefully this was just a one-time-only mistake for this driver, and not indicative of overall bad judgement!

Oh my. I am so glad your DD is ok. I am also glad your DH was there. What a smart little girl.

Why did your husband take your daughter to the doctor if she was injured?

I think the father just wanted to make sure the little girl was ok - that's why he took her to the doctor. It sounded like she was not visibly injured after the incident, but he just wanted to make sure.

Oh yes, the bus company should pay for the doctor visit.

They need to put sensors on the bus door (every city) so the bus cannot move with the door ajar or something caught.

>>> The poor children on the bus were screaming for the driver to stop.
What was with the driver? (philosophical question only)

Thank goodness she wasn't hurt. The driver needs retraining. They should not pull away until they have a visual of every child in a safe place.

OMG is right.... Thank God she was not hurt and had the good sense to pick up her feet. What did the driver say?

Thank goodness your daughter is okay! I've heard horrible stories about similar incidents that didn't end as well. I agree with the previous posters - please report this! That driver needs more training, and I somehow doubt that he will report it himself.

I'm glad your DD is okay but I would definitely be calling someone about this. Even though it was an accident, it could be a teaching tool for kids who ride the bus in case it ever happened to someone else.

I would have FLIPPED out!! What a smart girl you have and thank goodness she is okay!! I would be so mad I wouldnt be able to see straight. Something needs to be done about that bus driver.

Wow- this story is unbelievable. How did the driver not see the backpack stuck inside the door? You definitely should call someone about this. This bus driver needs to be much more aware of what he is doing. Very scary to think how awful this situation could have ended up. I am so glad that you DD was not hurt but I'm sure she is still terrified and probably nervous to go on the bus again!
