OT Ringworm in childs scalp

Noone I know has ever delt with this, so I thought I would try here. My DS2 was diagnosed with ringworm of the scalp last month. The dr did not take a sample to be tested until last week, and it will take three weeks to get results. She just said that it was ringworm and gave me a rx for griseofulvin. I took him back last week and she said that it didn't look any better so to continue with the griseofulvin. He has a small place on his scalp (about the size of a quarter) that is flakey and loosing hair. When combing his hair, small chunks of hair sometimes come out with flakes at the root. (Sorry I know its disgusting) A friend of mine tonight, who is a nurse, said it didn't look like ringworm. She said ringworm is more in the shape of a ring and red. His doesn't have a defined ring like border. Does anyone have any experience with this that they can share?

I just know that when a student at my school gets it, they are sent home & cannot return to school until they've been treated. Our school nurse diagnoses it often. I'm really surprised that two different people in the medical field have two different opinions on this. Sorry, & I hope it all gets worked out.

My son was told he probably had ring worm at 3 years old - he had a round red flaky spot on his face. The school wanted him to stay home. The test ended up coming back negative after several weeks, but it still had not gone away. It ended up being eczema, which went away just a couple of days after treating with hydrocortizone cream. He has random breakouts on his body that easily go away by putting lotion on it. It you feel comfortable treating him yourself, maybe you could try this.

My son had this in his scalp when he was in kindegarten and it was just as you described. I was so worried because it felt like a growth to me. Our dr. quickly diagnosed it as ringworm. It takes a while to cure in the scalp, but it will be gone soon

Do you know how long it took to start noticing hair regrowing in the spot? Thanks for you help.

My DD was also diagnosed with ringworm at a very young age. It was really eczema. She is now 16 and we are still dealing with it. But we have also dealt with ringworm in this house. Sometimes tea tree oil will work, but if it is really eczema that can irrate it. Ringworm can take forever to clear up! If it is eczema and you use hydrocortisone cream it usually starts to get better in a couple of days. I don't know if this will help, I know how frustrating things like this can be. Oh, eczema is very itchy, my DD describes it as the worst itch you will EVER have. The key to helping it clear up is to stop the itching. Good luck!

Why not look up ringworm online. Usually they will have a photo of what it should look like. Then you can compare what your son's scalp looks like to th picture.

One on my sons friends about 10 at the time, had ringworm onthe back of his head. I almost covered the whole back of his head. I was very scaley looking. I had only seen small ringworms on arms before never that huge. It took a while to grow back hair.

Yep, I had it when I was in second grade. Still have the scars on my head to prove it. I remember my grandma sent me home from my summer visit to her because it really grossed her out and she couldn't deal with it.

Mine was REALLY bad though and didn't respond to normal treatments so it took about 6 months to get rid of it.

My son had the same problem a few years ago. He did not have much of a red ring - that disappeared quickly. It took a couple of months to grow the hair back. He got permission to wear a hat to school while he was contagious so he thought it was great! They let him continue with the hat for a while until he was comfortable with his bald spot. Now you'd never know he had it. It can have different looks - sometimes round, sometimes oval. It does get better!

I would call a dermatologist. My DD was born in Guatemala and came home when she was 6 months old. She had something like you described on her head. the Dr said ringworm at first but referred us to a dermatologist. The derm said...not ringworm.....but it was some kind of skin fungus. she gave us an oral medication because the topical one only seemed to make to angrier.

we started to see it getting better almost immediately with the oral. she needed to be on it for about 2 (maybe 3) weeks. Cleared it right up! The derm said that there are LOTS of different things like this and some of them don't even have names yet.

We never had an issue again. Oh and her hair started to regrow as soon as the skin started to get better.

My son got this last year. He is on the wrestling team and it is something that does happen with that sport. They have to make sure they keep the mats clean and disinfected.
