OT - resume submission question

I want to apply for a Risk Managment position at work. The requirements are 3 years of experience in the medical field, a BS in a health related field and the ablity to lift 20 pounds.

I have the first and last requirments. I have an assosiates in nursing and a BS in Environmental Engineering (currently working as a RN). I am also going back to school for my master's in nursing (a want in the position, not a requirement).

To even submit my resume (and explain my lack of BS in nursing, but my returning to school for my masters) I'd have to fudge the answer on having a BS in health related field. There is a screen with yes/no answers and if I choose no, then I am automatically kicked out.

This is like my dream job - combining both my degrees. I think I would be really good at it and at least want to be considered for it.

emily- speaking as a RN- I wouldnt fudge it personally esp its a large hospital corp.I work with alot of nurses that have 4 year degrees in other subjects just not nursing. I know our hospital has certain requirements for different positions and are job specific with healthcare degrees. best of luck with your decision.

I'm not sure how your place of employment works, but based on my past experiences, I would contact the HR rep for the position and explain to him/her exactly what you stated here. Technically you don't have a BS in a health related field, so fudging on that piece won't help you in the long run, it'll just get you through the initial screen.

If HR will give you the name of the hiring manager who works in the department, you could contact them directly as well - let them know you're interested in the job but concerned because you don't specifically meet the requirements they stated (although you'll ultimately have a Master's degree in a health related field). It is possible for HR and hiring managers to pull out resumes or to look for them from certain candidates. Take a copy of your resume with you when you meet with them (assuming it's face to face).

Don't let a little computer program get in your way - that is just there to keep HR from sifting through a huge stack of unqualified applicants (and it sounds like you are at least qualified to interview for the job!).

I give you all this advice based on the working environment of my former workplace - people were encouraged to seek out opportunities and network to get to the job they wanted. If the environment is much different at your place of work, these suggestions may not work.

Please don't fudge the answer. Call HR and talk to the recruiter. Putting false information on an application (which the screening tool is technically a part of) can cause you to be automatically disqualified. I've seen a couple of wonderfully qualfied candidates get rejected because they "fudged" answers on "paper"---had they not but brought the issues up to HR verbally it wouldn't have been a problem.

I recently retired from a position that required me to do a lot of staffing. My advice to anyone in your position would be to contact the HR staffing officer and explain the situation; and, under no circumstances should any job applicant make any "fudged" claims on a resume or job application. When it came to educational requirements, it was standard procedure in my organization to require either transcripts or photocopies of degrees/professional certificates from qualified candidates.

I say do not lie on the application, but apply and go for it. I do not have a college degree, but took college classes to help me get a better job. I also work in the hospital field. I started out at the bottom of the pole and worked my way up to a manager position. The college classes I took made a big impact even though I do not have a degree.
