OT- problems w/DD dance recital costume

Well, the costumes were a little snug but they fit better than I expected. It's strange b/c younger DD's costume is also a small from Curtain Call and it is much smaller. Yesterday the teacher left me a message to keep the bags they came in because she may be able to get larger costumes. Some other girls are having trouble with their costumes too. DD says they fit ok but the ballet one is a little short. Hopefully everything will work out. I am going to have her try on her costumes again. I did not get to see her in the western one, DD said it was long enough.

I can feel your daughter's pain!!! I was in dance for 14 years and every year there would be a costume that didn't fit correctly, it seemed. And those costumes are so OUTRAGEOUSLY expensive, you hate to have one that doesn't fit right! Hope that it works out ok.....
My dd 5 had her first dance recital last night! My sister is the teacher, and I actually help her make all of the costumes for the show! She operates one of the 2 dance studios in our small town. (she actually is in direct competition with the same woman we took dance with for a few years!) She tries to make dance affordable to all children by only charging for lessons. They only have to supply a leotard and tights, dancing shoes if they can afford them (otherwise my sister has an arsenol of shoes for borrowing), and a plate of cookies for the intermission at recital. For the recital she just takes a free will donation, knowing some of the parents wouldn't be able to afford tickets for all of their families if they were charged. She also only uses "age appropriate" songs (a direct contrast from the other studio, who, in example, had girls dancing to the song "Girls Girls Girls" with garters w/ fake dollar bills stuck in them! . My husband has actually walked out of that studio's performances because of the indeceny!) Next year, my sister is planning to go non-profit so she will not even have to charge the students for lessons! Ok, enough bragging......
Hope everything works out for your daughter! It's important to feel comfortable on stage. It's sometimes scary enough without having to worry aobut your costume!

I am so glad the others fit better and she is happier with them . My DD's costumes have always been by A Wish Come True and we have been pretty lucky with them so far. Good luck getting the one that fits so badly replaced!

Now hears one for all of you dance Mom's. How many times have you spent a fortune on these costumes only to find them the tackiest thing you have ever seen ? I swear our dance school seems to always pick costumes that should only be worn by a child much older as they are completely inappropriate for a preschool age child . My niece had a costume last year where the top was completely see through and she was only 7!! One of the dads pitched a fit . Why do they do this ?

I have always loved the outfits my kids got and for some reason they always fit too. I know there are some parents that arent as lucky, but just in my case I have made out ok.

One year, our cotumes didn't make it on time for the recital! They called about a week before the show to tell our instructor. Of course she was beside herself. She ended up having us wear the costumes that all ready came for her students in her other studio in the town next to us. They didn't all fit the best, but they were better than nothing!


And DizMom, I totally agree with you! I had two dance teachers growing up. The one mentioned above always had tactful, beautiful costumes. My next teacher....not so much! (she's the teacher that my husband walked out of her recital and refuses to watch her shows ever again!) It seems to me, some instructors are readying their students for the pole instead of the ballet! My first teacher ALWAYS talked to and showed the parents pictures of the costumes before she purchased. The 2nd....well you just got what she got and that was it! Too bad if it does show your hiney rumpus, it looks good on the stick thin short girl next to you.

It seems to me, some instructors are readying their students for the pole instead of the ballet!

We went to a contest last month, and a group of dads rolled out a scaffolding section. Then the group of 17yr old girls came out in black bikinis and fishnet stockings, and ew.... I am not exaggerating at all. I was questioning even the legality. And trying to picture my dh helping set up this little adventure in child porn (albeit older kids). Unbelievable. Then the next group is 5-7yo in poodleskirts??? Crazy. It has us reethinking the whole contest thing. What really gets me is our teacher has the girls doing 4 different things, and the only one they ALL want to do is clogging. So why not just do clogging contests? Then we wouldn't have to even see such rot.

For the past two years I have had to do major work to my dd6's costumes, which has been very stressfull to me. Especially since she has not mentioned any time when she will be measuring. Last year was hard and stressful for everyone but it was semi understandable w/ the hurricane and for me I was not home during the time that they did measurements. This year was just insane the only costume she has this year that fits is her hip hop costume. Her tap and ballet aren't too bad For tap she is dancing to Bop to the Top and the material is itchy so I will be adding some small liners, and ballet they are dancing to Be Our Guest so they have little french maid costumes that are adorable but since the are both made of a satin/nylon material the skirt slips and that is an easy fix. Her acro costume on the other had the front has so much extra material that it hangs down in front so far that it looks like a dress. Another mom made the comment that they must be made for little boys b/c the back is fine but the front has extra material for extra stuff and they are by no means for boys. We finally got our tap costumes the week before last and our revue is on sunday, the company that they were order from was so behind on our order that they didn't even make all of them the same way rhinestones were left off of one straps were left off of another. At least in the past years the costumes were made exactly the same and they only needed to be adjusted size wise.

No advice--but our dance studio had HUGE problems with the company they have bought costumes from for 10 years. Evidently they were sold and essentially screwed up MANY studio orders all across the country.

I wonder if the teacher is absolutely sure of the size she ordered--our instructors always measure the girls and by the size appropriate for the measurements (ordering for the larger size if there is an issue between measurements).

One of our late costumes came in for a girl in our dance class and it seemed awfully small. We tried it on my DD who is the smallest in the class and it was way tight on her. Thankfully the part is a simple leotard and the instructor suggested unding the seem in the crotch and adding fabric to lengthen it. Stinks to have to do it and the parent should NOT have to do it--but the costume company royally screwed up in general and there was no way to have this fixed in time. It was like they just sewed a bunch of costumes at random sizes cut too small. Very weird.


The studio owner found out from some studio blogs that other studios had similar issues and costume shops were offering their inventory (to be generous as well as court new business). I know for a couple of classes, that the owner had to find something similar elsewhere that was on the shelf and could be obtained quickly.



So your post doesn't shock me that there is an issue and it makes me wonder if it is the same company.

wish I could remeber the name of the company we used - I bet there are more than of us who had the same one!
