I know this isn't the board for this but I wanted to share this with everyone. We have a homeless and feral cat problem in our neighborhood and a stray kitten adopted our family a few months ago. By the time we got her to the vet she was already pregnant.
She had 4 kittens and has rejected them all- she is actually trying to kill them. The vet said when kittens have kittens they often lack the maternal instinct.
Of the 4 kittens only 1 has survived-we call him Trooper and are prepared for the worst but hoping for the best. We are hand feeding it and when possible having her nurse from Momma (it takes one person to hold mamma down and another to protect kitten.) We are doing everything the vet has recommended and now we are just trying to stay positive.
Just a reminder for everyone
PLEASE SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS

How cute and how very sad! I totally agree with the spaying and neutering..its getting out of hand.

I hope you are able to save the little one!

I agree with the spay and neuter comment, I work at a cat rescue and we have about 100 ferals living on the property
we feed them and try to catch them to get them taken care of but, it's not always easy :( we also have ferals in my neighborhood and it's awful to see them starving and getting hit by cars (we've had a few lately) these animals deserve love just as any other ,they are just scared and if your lucky enough to have one adopt you, they've done so for a reason :) Kudos Cheapmom for giving this kitten and her babies a chance and I hope she cooperates soon in the nurturing mommy role. God bless you :)

We had about 9 stray or ferals living under our porch- working with animal control we have trapped 7 and transfered them to shelters- having trouble getting the other 2 trapped (they are so smart- getting food out of the trap, etc..)- we keep food and water available for them- I know if we don't get them trapped soon those 2 cats will soon become 20 and so on and so on...
thanks for the warm wishes

As the owner of two cats, my "original" boys before my two sons were born, this breaks my heart. Both of my guys are neutered and don't go outside. I love them so much and would be heartbroken if anything ever happened to them.

Good luck with the baby. Trooper is a good name for a spunky kitty. I think he'll make it!

I'm surprised they didn't terminate the pregnancy. I use to volunteer w/ a local spay and neuter association and our vet did that....It used to completely freak me out but then as I spent more time w/ the ferel cats & abandoned kittens that couldn't find homes...I understood why. Good luck w/ your kitten...I'm glad to see she adopted a good home!

What a cute kitten, and how dedicated you are! We currently have a new cat that adopted us. Just showed up on the back porch on March 6, starving. It has taken a long time to gain its trust. It is a young cat, I think male. We are working hard to get it used to being handled and then will take it to the vet to be altered. It will join our other three altered cats, one of which was feral ( and sometimes still acts like it!). We have no idea how it got to us - we are in a pretty rural area, but we sure couldn't turn it away. What's one more  ?

Poor little kitty. Have you thought about buying some baby formula(yes, baby formula) and a kitty bottle and just feeding it yourself? I did it with a dog(so it might be a little different). It does take some dedication.

Good luck

Sabrina

You are doing a wonderful thing. I wish you the best of luck with both kitties. We adopted a stray, pregnant female. She didn't have this problem though and was very motherly towards her babies. We still have her and one of the babies, and both are "fixed". I'm such a proponent of getting that done. Good for you!!!

I think it is a wonderful thing you are doing, so many people would have turned their backs & said "it's not my problem"

I wholeheartedly agree about neuturing your pets. We have two cats right now & our oldest one was a stray but was already neutured. As for as baby, as soon as he was old enough to get fixed, he was at the vets ::yes::

With every pet (dog or cat) I have owned, it is one of the first things I do (providing they are old enough for it)

Good Luck & I hope little Tropper survives

Thanks for all the warm wishes but sadly Trooper didn't make it. He became very lethargic last night and wouldn't eat and went to sleep peaceful and warm and slipped away.
I am okay knowing that he didn't go because of a lack of trying on our part but my heart is a little broken.
My kids are learning a big lesson. That is the hardest part seeing them learn this sad reality of nature.
BTW- we were doing a combination of nursing and bottle feeding. We were feeding it kitten formula from the vet. It was intensive care for 3 days- the little thing even needed help voiding its bladder, etc.. Very sad. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

I'm glad you posted this. We live on a farm and have the same problem - lots of feral cats dropped off. I've adopted several who were simply starving to death. I'm getting them spayed and neutered one at a time and finding home for them. I've never experienced this before - and a cat I rescued was 8 months old and dropped kittens back in March. She was a great mother thank goodness. We found homes for all 6 kitties and the mother, we named her Brie, is now spayed.

It's so sad - babies having babies. I'm sorry about Trooper. Pixie dust and prayers are being sent to you through the internet - and through my heart.

So sorry the little kitty didn't make it. At least you tried.

Cheapmom, I wish everyone out there were more like you. It sounds like there are very many good kitty moms (probably puppymoms too!) on the DIS, one more reason to love this place. I am so sorry about Trooper. The sick and helpless ones always pull you in so fast! Just know that he passed away after experiencing more love and tenderness in his short time here than so many other animals do in a lifetime. Bless you for doing what you did, and pixie dust to you and all the other wonderful pet owners on this thread. :wave2:

I am so sorry about Trooper. I know the world isn't all bad because there are special people like you out there. Thank you for trying your best to save the little kittens and spreading the message about spaying and neutering.
