OT: Potty training girls

I potty trained my DD the same month she turned 2. And I did it in 2 days what I did was throw all the diapers away and bought her underwear. And I would take her every hour on the hour to the bathroom and let her sit on the tolit for about 10 min. We spent the better part of 2 days in the bathroom with her but it worked.

I'm glad to know others are doing this! I was hoping that my almost 3yo DD will be potty trained for our cruise in November, but, she's not showing much interest. I haven't pushed it--just introduced her to "going on the potty" idea--we have a small potty and have read potty books and watched "Bear In The Big Blue House" potty tape many times. (We all sing the "Toileteer" song).
I think she's ready, just in no particular hurry as I'm changing her pants & that's working for her . I'm putting underpants on her now to see what she does. Also, I'll follow the Dr. Phil instructions & see how it works out. I think I saw his show on this and they made it look so easy, LOL!--can't hurt to try.

sk!mom-Yes she likes to wear her panties and no there is nothing she really wants. She doesn't really care if she has on panties, training pants, pull-ups or diapers. It doesn't matter.

I've been giving her 1 M&M for trying and 5 for success, no succes so far. Last night my dh caught her as she was trying to BM and got it in the toilet. We made a very big deal about that. We had popsicles to celebrate, called Grandma, cheered her on.

She's at my mom's today. I need a break.

At least you know you're not alone ! Seriously ... I never, ever found the right thing to bribe with. M&M's, stickers, smiley faces, cheers, special videos. Nothing worked. Plus, she was never been one of those kids who really, really wants to please her parents. She couldn't care less. So, even though she "got" the idea of using the potty, she didn't do it to please me. The main problem is that my DD is too focused on what she is doing, no matter what that thing is. Using the potty is a distraction for her. Luckily, she hated to be poopy, so that was done in the potty by about 2 1/2. But, she really didn't really care if she was wet. **sigh**

It's not really anything I can control and giving up the mere thought that I had any control over the situation was the hardest for me. Even once I knew intellectually there was nothing more I could do, I was still frustrated at her lack of progress. It irked me when I would see a tiny little girl in undies ... I still get a bit jealous and wish my DD were easier. My guess is that she won't be wetting her pants in college and that's enough for me now

Happy Birthday!!!! Mine turns 6 at WDW. We're spending 2 weeks with her 6 year old cousin. Maybe some better potty use will rub off on her!

Potty training is getting better..Dd has anticipated her own potty needs a couple of times...others she just says "Mommy, there's no poopy or pee pee in my panties"...the latest was accompanied by removal of clothes. So I carried her to the bathroom and she went. So we still have to work on the where to go when the need strikes.


As far as sitting on the potty encouragement...on our first day--I sat dd in front of tv on the potty...gave her some drinks and then gave her a manicure and pedicure She loved it and it did get her to stay there.

I am right with you all! I am trying to get my 2.5 year old to go to. Yesterday she put her big girl underware on and the pooped them and played befor she told me. She does not care at all if she wet too! So i am in the same boat as you all. I alos got an 17 month old!

We did the potty training thing with DD (2.5) this past weekend and it worked!!!!! We started Friday night and did fine in the big undies. She as always seemed semi interested but was way to attached to the diapers. I told her that I was throwing teh diapers away because it is time for her to be a big girl. I took her to the store and let her oick several packs of undies and the rest is hisory. She has done great all week only 3 accidents. She does both in the potty, I know some people have a problem with getting thier kids to do both. i was scared of the commute in the mornings and nights. 1 1/2 hrs in the car!! We bring the pitty with us and pull over if necessary. only had to once. I started out putting DD in diapers at night but by Sunday night, she wanted big undies at night too. the first night she had an accident but has been fine the rest of the week. I have had to get up every night around 2 am to help her go (put teh potty in her room b/c the bathroom is downstairs). Waking up in the middle of the night is a small price to pay to have her completely potty trained so quickly. Good luck to veryone else going through this too. I am going to take the $20 a week that I would be spending on diapers and put that in my disney account.

Okay went to walmart this morning and got the plastic pants to put over her big girl underware. I got some for the younger one too. We are going away next weekend so i will be starting when we get home! I have put the pants on the older one! We will se how it goes!

I'm almost out of diapers and she still hasn't done it. This morning she was dry and we sat for awhile, ate breakfast, sat, went upstairs, sat.....NOTHING. We were off to the zoo for her b-day so I had to put on the diaper and go.

I think I'm off to buy plastic pants to go over the undies but until she does it on the potty I just don't know!

She is now officially 3 and preschool is in 5 weeks. LOL Maybe we'll do another session of Kindermusik instead. Darn it, I was really looking forward to those 4 hours/week to myself. LOL

Does she have to be potty trained for pre-school? That's terrible! I would find another pre-school. My DD's pre-school allowed 2-3 year olds who were not potty trained and 4-5 year old who were. Even in her older class, accidents were a pretty normal occurance. We kept an extra change of clothes at the school and brought home dirty clothes more than once.

FWIW, you may find she does better at school. The teachers do a regular potty time and she may find watching the other kids use the potty incentive enough to try harder.

Our school requires that to be in the 3YO room you must be fully trained, but they have a transition room that is for 3s not quite there yet and it was a lifesaver - Pembo - is there an option like that for you?

Someone else mentioned night time. DD is 5 and a super deep sleeper. We've tried undies in bed and she does not wake up to go, and sleeps so deep she doesn't even know she wets until she wakes up and everything is freezing cold and still wet. I'm not quite ready to do the waking up in the night, any other suggestions?

We wake up and my DD rarely wets the bed. We put her to sleep her regular time and "wake" her right before we go to bed. Sometimes we make her walk and sometimes we carry her to the potty to use it. She snuggles right back into bed without a problem.

I think around 3 is a really good age to do "fast" potty training! My daughter was almost 3 and loved her pullups- mainly I think because she didn't have to stop playing or doing whatever she was doing to use the potty. On a week in the end of August when we had no activities or reason to leave the house much, I told her, no more pull-ups. From now on you use the potty and underwear. On the first day, she begged for her pull-ups, but I stayed firm. She had accidents of course, but at least realized what being wet felt like. I also told her she could get her first Barbie when she pooped in the toilet. Well a day later she went in on her own and pooped! At that point, even though she had some peeing accidents, pooping wise she never looked back. She still wore a pull-up at night for about 4 or 5 months afterwards. (more my issue than hers! she finally said she wasn't going to wear one at night anymore!)
At any rate, good luck. Just be patient, but firm, and you and she will do great!

There is one preschool in my area that takes 3 yo who are not potty trained BUT it costs twice as much as any other school, so it isn't an option for us.

She woke up dry this morning and 40 mins later we are still on the potty. She can't hold it forever can she? We've even taken a break for breakfast and nothing. At least I know that once she figures it out, she won't have to go very often.


ahutton-I had a friend with a dd that was a very deep sleeper and had the same problem, didn't wake up until she was cold and wet. The doc told her there isn't much you can do. They didn't give her liquids before bed, woke her up before they went to bed etc. but they just put her in a pull-up to save on laundry at 3 am.

I have a 4.5 year like this been trying this week doing the wake thing not going to good still wet pullups.

Okay i had 2.5 year old in big girl pants with the plastic liner over top all day yesterday never told me she had to go yet. I just brought her inside from playing was all wet and told her to clean it up. She did not like touching the wet underware. Then sat up on the potty and peed. We threw a party for her in the bathroom and gave her a sticker. Wish us luck it keeps moving in a good direction!

So glad I found this thread!! My dd is going to be 3 at the end of August and we are in serious potty training mode. She has been going on the potty every now and then for about 6 months, but not on a consistant basis. She has been wearing panties for the past 3 days and will run to me saying "pee pee on potty" whenever she has to go...of course there is usually a little wetness already in her panties, but she holds most of it back and goes in the potty. Whenever we leave the house or at night time I put the diapers back on.....guess I need to get rid of the diapers and just let the accidents happen. Maybe I will bring the portable potty in the car and see how that works. The goal is to have dd potty trained by December as we are going on a cruise and would love for her to enjoy the kids club. I really think she is ready to ditch the diapers for good!

I would like to hear the suggestions for nightime. We have a DD4 who has been daytime trained for more than a year now. About 4-6 months ago we tried with the nighttime. She stopped wearing pullups at night and we just have her in undies. She goes to the bathroom before she goes to bed and then we take her again before we go to bed. But she still has accidents early in the morning. Sometimes she goes for a week or so without an accident, then all of a sudden it is day after day of an accident.

How do you handle this?
