We are moving to PA this summer. I thought we would be close to State college but we actually will be close to Lewisburg. ANyone here from that area? We are looking to buy a home and from what I can tell we should go in the Mifflinburg or Lewisburg school district. Mifflinburg would be closer to my DH's job. I have heard we should stay away from the MiddWest school district and of course that is where I have been finding some nice house that we can afford.:confused3
I am just looking for someone to talk to who may know the area. We are moving there from Alaska so it is a tough time for us right now:headache:

Wow! That's a heck of a move! I'm from Pittsburgh, which isn't close to you, so can't help with any schools. Just wanted to say welcome to Pa! Good luck with your move!

Just piping in...I grew up in State College, and that's a great place to raise kids, etc...I don't know much about the Lewisburg/Mifflinburg area, although Bucknell University is in Lewisburg, and often schools are pretty good in a town that houses a university. Hope that helps a little, and good luck with the move!

Hi there! Fellow PA person here. Lewisburg is about 2 1/2 hours north of me. I live in York. I can't help you much on the schools, but I can tell you that the area is beautful! We love driving up route 15 and looking at the scenery. Gosh, that sure is quite the move from Alaska to PA. One brighter note....I bet are winters aren't quite as harsh!! Have a safe move and welcome to the Keystone State!!

Good luck with everything.

We visited Lewisburg for a concert a few years ago and it was lovely.

I love living in PA, except for the cold. Coming from Alaska though, I think you will enjoy the weather here. :-)

Thanks for the replies! I knew it was a long shot but thought I would put it out there just in case.
We are excited to get there but I am struggling with this house buying business.

My Grandparents live in Lewisburg.... it's a cute town... VERY Small... if your coming from a bigger area.. it might be quite an adjustment... You may want to go with Mifflenburg... or right outside of it... if you can find a good school district

OP--You are moving to a beautiful, somewhat rural area of central PA! It is a genuinely nice area to raise a family. :thumbsup2

I grew up just 'up river' from there, in Danville. I had my wedding and reception in Lewisburg, and continue to travel into that area c. once a week (to visit family). My Father works in real estate, and does appraisals throughout that same general area (his office is based out of Sunbury)--but he is no longer involved in sales, so can't help you with finding a home.

Lewisburg and Selinsgrove both have excellent school districts. A guy I attended HS with is the Band instructor at Selinsgrove, and he runs a really exceptional program (if any of your children are involved in music). Lewisburg itself is a beautiful small town, home to Bucknell University (my DSis and DBiL both did their undergrad studies there)... and the surrounding area is primarilly rural countryside and woodlands. There are State Parks and Forrest lands close by, some excellent local wineries, and lots of small, family farms--depending on where you settle, you may even find that you have Amish neighbors. The drive from either Selinsgrove or Lewisburg to Mifflinburg only takes a matter of minutes... so a very easy commute.

My grandparents live about 20 min away from Lewisburg. You'll be pretty close to Knoebels Amusement Resort if you need some park food or rides to go on popcorn:: . Sorry I can't help with the school district. My grandparents live in the Southern Columbia School District (Catawissa area) and it's pretty small. Good luck with your move!

Oh, I almost forgot about the Bloomsburg Fair at the end of Sept. They have lots of great food there (it's really a large fair considering the size of the area!).

I will also so welcome to PA :) I am in Reading, so I cannot help with specifics of your new area. Like others, I have visited Bucknell and Knoebels and it is a lovely, rural area. It actually may suit you well coming from Alaska. Hope the move goes smoothly, and good luck with the house hunt!

DH extended family is from this area. We return each year for a family reunion. It is a very nice area with lots to love. People are generally more open and friendly then down in our more populated area (just outside of Philly) in State of Delaware.

Welcome to the East Coast.

Could you possiblly rent for 6 months or so if this is going to be a permanant move to get a handle on area before you buy?

Also thumbs up for Knoebles. It's no Disney but a family tradition that my kids love.

Thanks for all the help and welcoming us to PA!!:goodvibes

We considered renting but our DD has switched schools many times (military) and we are trying to make this as easy as possible on her.

It' s stange to hear Lewisburg called small. To us it looks huge.:confused3 I am sure we will find a home. Eventually:rolleyes1

Anymore info is appreciated!!!

We have family up there but they always come down for the holidays so I don't much but I wanted to Welcome you also! We live in South Central PA. :goodvibes

We live 20 minutes from Lewisburg. My husband is a window cleaner and most of his business comes from homes in Lewisburg. If you have questions just PM me.

To the OP,

Spoke to my Dad tonight (he has worked in real estate in this area for c. 30+ years, first in sales and now strictly doing appraisals)....

He recommended that you may want to contact the Caldwell Banker Real Estate office based in Lewisburg. They handle rentals, if you are interested in the option of renting when you initially arrive in PA. That would allow you the opportunity to take your time and look around at properties in the area, before deciding where & what to buy.

He also said that, in his opinion, the school district for Mifflinburg is comparable in quality to Lewisburg. Both have good schools and are good districts to live within (own property in). Which you might prefer would probably depend upon whether or not you would enjoy the atmosphere of a 'college town', or the slightly quieter, more rural setting.

Welcome to PA! I'll be up in the area your looking into this weekend... see ticker below.. its a nice part of PA :) I live about 25 min away.

Knoebels opens this weekend.. that's why I'll be up there.

Hi, we're in Reedsville, near Lewistown...I've been told we are about 30 miles from Mifflinburg. We'll have to have our own SC area meet!
