OT-Newport Rhode Island activities

We will be making our annual pilgrimage to Newport at the end of July. We are attending a Black & White Ball there and a few other social events. We are kind of getting tired of the regular touristy stuff, but we enjoy the atmosphere. We normally charter a sailboat, tour the mansions on Ocean Drive & do some shopping along the wharf-BTDT, but like Disney, we repeat it all the time. Anyone familiar with the surrounding areas of Newport and anything that may be of interest and not too far of a drive?

pROvidence isn't too far a drive and there are great restauarants, Brown University and some great art museums to check out.

roger williams zoo is also very nice. they also have beautiful park grounds. and there are a couple of museums in there as well. it's a great way to spend a day! we love it.
