I posted this in the Atlantic Canada thread but thought I'd put it on the main part of the board too....anyone able to help me out?

Trying to convince Hubby we can do a trip to the Rock next year but he's thinking it will cost an arm and a leg.

My plan is to take the ferry to Port aux Basques, then drive to Rocky Harbour. I'd like to rent a housekeeping cottage for a few nights and explore the Park (we normally camp on our vacations but I don't want to drag all that stuff with us and chance weather putting a damper on our vacation....).

Then I'd like to drive across to St. John's with a night layover in Grand Falls-Windsor to break up the drive (anyone with experience at that Glow In the Dark Mini Golf?).

Then a few nights in St. John's with a visit to the Geo Centre, Signal Hill etc..

Then take the ferry home from there (with sleeping accomadations).

We've never been, with the exception of DH's one night trip to St. John's for work where he saw nothing but that one street with all the bars. I'm a planning junky, so have already begun researching and asking around. We have a vacation account I sock every spare penny into and I'm trying to rack up some airmiles points so I can get Delta gift certificates and get gas at Petro Can so I can get gas cards on paoints again. Any PetroCanadas in NFL?

Any help or advice? Cheaper but nice places to stay? Thanks!!

Great to see you want to visit our beautiful province!! What time of the year are you planning to visit? Gross Morne (Rocky Harbour) is absolutely beautiful. I'm not familiar with accommodations out there but I know there are a lot of cottages in that area because it is such a high tourist destination.

There is a lot to see and do in Gros Morne - make sure you take in the Table lands and the boat tours through the fjords.

I'm glad to see that you are planning to spend a night in Grand Falls instead of driving from Rocky Hr to st. John's. Alot of people who visit do not realize the size of our province and think its just a couple of hours drive across the whole province!!

There are not Petro Canada stations in NL but the North Atlantic stations (can't miss them - they are orange) honour any points cards from Petro Canada.

You probably have a lot of questions - I hope I can be of some help to you.

Hi Rhonda...sorry about my late response back...life got in the way of my trip planning for a bit there.

We're planning (or rather I am because hubby is not thinking that far ahead) of coming in mid August partly because that's the best time for me to get away from the farm and partly I keep being told that's the best time to avoid the socked-in fog. DD is disappointed we'd be missing peak iceburg "season" though.

I'm thinking about 2-3 nights in Rocky Harbour, 1 night in Grand Falls, 2-3 nights in St. John's though at this point I'm open to suggestions. I definitly want to plan for a couple full days in St. John's to do Signal Hill, Geo Centre etc.

Take care!

Another Newfoundlander here!!!

I think it is awesome that you are planning a trip to our beautiful province. We are a very wide-spread province, but the sights are great!

Gros Morne National Park is gorgeous, and there is a ton to do in the area. Although I haven't done it myself, I've heard the Western Brook Boat Tour is awesome, and this summer, I took in one of the plays that were part of the Gros Morne Theatre Festival, which was great, I really enjoyed it. Depending on the dates, I know they have a kids one as well, and they will probably have some new ones next year. I really really enjoyed the one that I saw. They take place in Cow Head, NL, and I know they are running until Sept 20 this year, so they will likely be taking place when you are in the area as well.

There is also an insectarium in the area, lots to see and do!

Love the St. Johns area as well, Signal Hill must be seen, and the geo centre sounds neat. It's also great to just walk around on the streets downtown (Water Street and Duckworth Street), this is very close to George Street, the street with all the bars that you are referring to.

If you've got any questions at all, just let me know, feel free to PM me if you'd like! :)
