OT New York State Tests ?

I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction on this. Do parents have the right to request their child does not take the state tests? If Yes is there some place to find this in writng? I've tried the State Ed web site and they have a parent info page that has the heading "Does my child have to take this test" then they answer it with information on how the test results are used. However they never say yes or no.

I don't live in NYS, but I don't think there's a way to avoid the tests. I teach special ed and even the most severely handicapped kids are taking standardized tests, compliments of NCLB. The only kids that don't test are those that are to young (under 8 by a certain date), 9th graders, and 11/12th graders that have already passed the high school exam. The severe/profoundly delayed teacher had 2 kids that just couldn't test due to medical reasons- one was hospitalized, the other was immune compromised so noone could go to the house to test- and the parents had to get letters from the doctors stating exactly why the kids could not be tested.

FAll students must take the tests. The only way out of it would be to keep a kid home for the next two weeks but then the school will get in trouble.

If your child does not take the test, they will have to repeat the grade or attend summer school. (principal told my sister this).

What grade is your child in?

I believe the feds require testing per NCLB in grades 3 or 4 and up. So, most states (maybe none) offer opt outs.

As someone else said, there are tests for almost all students, regardless of disability.
