Hey guys. This is a little off topic but I am hoping that someone here can help me. I am a college student and I recently received an invitation to join the "National Society of Leadership and Success". It says that I have been invited because I have above a 3.3 GPA. It also says that it is an asset to your resume' to join and stuff like that. I am concerned that it is a scam.

The letter inviting me to join is from someone at my school and I have been in contact with her. She wasn't very helpful in telling me if it was a scam (maybe the school gets money for every student that joins?) Is this like the "Who's Who" invitation that you get in high school? I know that is really not worthy anything. It will cost me $75 to join and if it is legitimate and worth it, I don't mind paying the money.

Has anyone heard of it?

Scam.

Don't bother. The only ones I bothered with was if I had a 3.8 or higher.

My DD18 was nominated for the National Society of Collegiate Scholars through the chapter at her school. Same deal...welcome packet yadda-yadda-yadda, such an honor, yadda-yadda-yadda, please send $75.

Now, there is supposed to be an induction ceremony at her school in the fall and she has spoken to the faculty advisor who sponsors the society. We're still deciding whether this one is a scam as well.

My daughter just got the same letter. She has received several lately, but this one looked more interesting. She joined online and it gave her several designs of a t-shirt to pick (included in the price). She also received an email shortly afterwards giving her two choices to attend a 3 hr seminar. If I find out anything else, I will report it here.

Hey guys. I just wanted to tell everyone that I e-mailed my advisor about the group and this is what he said:

"You’re right to be cautious, and you’re the 2nd person who’s come to me about this.

To me, and this is just my opinion, it’s exactly as you suspect. A money maker for the company, but not a bonifide organization. They have a super slick website with video of Goldie Hawn and some other celebrities, but it comes across more like an infomercial than an academic society. Plus the seventy five dollar membership is a little steep. Because it’s so new, I would not be comfortable mentioning them in any resume or school application that I did.

With that being said, I would go to the informational session (I’m planning to go) to see what they talk about. Perhaps they are onto something, and if so it may be worth getting into."

That's just his opinion but it confirms what most of you have said. Today is the last day for me to sign up and I really couldn't decide. Thanks so much for everyone's help. It is much appreciated!

Just wanted to let you know that in researching the National Society of Leadership and Success I came across this page http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/542056-national-society-collegiate-scholars.html, which talks about the society you are referring to. The majority of the people on this forum say that the group is a scam. Of course it is just their opinions.

Really with a 3.3 (which isn't bad, but not stellar) it wouldn't really be a honor society.

It sounds and looks like an infomercial. It is a wonderful scam which "key" buzzwords like Leadership and Success which sound lovely but really aren't.

Put it this way, I didn't even join Golden Key and other honor societies because I just didn't want to pay out for the "honor".

And honestly, don't worry.. .the deadline "never" passes. You would get a new renewal notice in about 2-3 weeks.

Yes, I think you're right. On a different note, I heard someone else mention that a 3.3 really wasn't that good of a grade point average, but I think it depends on how it's done at your school. Someone was saying that at some schools you can get higher than 4.0. At my school, a 3.3 is above a B average, which in my opinion, is pretty awesome. I'm not being nitpicky of your answer -- just wondering if it's true that there are different grading scales?

3.3 is ok., not bad, but not technically an 'honor' gpa. Iwouldn't call it a BAD GPA, but lower than what I would do.

In my school, you have to maintain a 3.5-4.0 to remain in specific programs. There are students with a 3.8 or higher and so many people with a 4.0 so in that case a 3.3 is low.

In some dual/triple major programs you have to have a 3.8 or higher to continue so everyone has a minimum of 3.8.

I totally bombed my first semester - 2.4! I spent the rest of college bringing it up to a 3.3 - I was going for a 3.4, but I ended up with a A- in a piano course (an elective). I was not very proud of my 3.3, but it was certainly better than the 2.4!

Oh, okay! Wow. Well it sounds like you guys go to some very competitive schools. I am hoping to go to optometry school and the average GPA they accept is a 3.65 .... crazy how things are different at different schools.
