Mary Jo,

Help!

Calling from PA, trying to get a camping ressie at Upper Pines in Yosemite. Internet ressies seem to be down for now. Been trying since 10 am EST

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted!

Sorry for the OT thread.

Thanks.

Pam

There are thirteen campgrounds in Yosemite National Park. Camping reservations for up to seven of these campgrounds are available five months in advance. Visit our camping information page for more information about camping reservations.

(NPS web page was down yesterday for upgrades, so maybe they are tweaking the resservation page, too :) )

Good luck with your ressie...

link to reservation page then select link for UPPER PINES ....

(click on the link an go have a cup of coffee...the pages are loading very s-l-o-o-o-w-w-l-y :) )

I got all the way to the dates page... I tried to put a shortcut link in here for you, but it won't allow access from that page. If it doesn't load the first time, try refresh/try again and then wait....

Thanks for your assistance and good thoughts!

After almost 4 1/2 hours of trying via phone and internet, we got the last two reservations in the whole park for the two dates we will be there. Even had to take them at separate campgrounds, but figure that will allow us to see more of Yosemite.

Looking forward to visiting.

Again, thanks for the help and indulging the OT thread.

<font color=navy>Sorry I missed this post, but I'm glad you got in. :) What two campgrounds are you staying at? Have you taken a look on the online maps to see what sites you're at?

We booked two campgrounds once - my mom & me - but it was totally by accident. I had gotten Upper River (which doesn't exist anymore because of the flooding in '97), and she forgot that we camped at Upper River (since 1970), and booked Upper Pines. It was nice because we had been camping in the same place for so long, and now we had an opportunity to try something new.

How many days are you going to be there, and have you been there before?

Mary Jo,

We are going to be at Wawona (sorry if wrong spelling) the first night and at Upper Pines the second night.

We are traveling all over trying to get a sampling of the best of the best...

We have a motorhome and are driving cross country and back. The whole trip will be about a month long.

The California leg will pick up as we head to Disneyland from Las Vegas. Plan on staying at Grand Californian for two nights.

Would like to visit a great So. Cal beach before we start heading north. Any ideas?

Then we go to Sequoia and Kings Canyon for 2 nights, then on to Yosemite.

I think from there we might be somewhere in Napa, before heading toward Lake Tahoe and into Nevada.

Any must sees along our route would be appreciated. I know our time frame is real tight.

Thanks for all your information on DL, as well as CA. Neither DH or I have been to CA, so this is going to be quite an adventure.

Where are you staying at Sequoia? How many nights?

A couple of places I highly recommend ...Go to Crescent Meadow, take a cooler for a picnic maybe ... When you go to Crescent Meadow, you'll go past the tunnel tree, where your car can go under a fallen sequoia, and you can go to Moro Rock or Crescent Meadow. If you decide on Moro Rock, you can go up the 1/4 mile of steps to the top & get a wide view of everything. The only bad thing about that is that since the San Joaquin Valley is so smoggy, you'll see that, unless it's been raining. Crescent Meadow is awesome! I always like going there early or late afternoon when the deer come out. We've seen deer and bears over there several times. They won't bother you - you just need to not bother them. :) You'll also pass the autolog. They closed that to cars parking on top of it a couple of years ago because the tree can't support the weight anymore.

While in the area, also visit the General Sherman tree - the largest living thing on Earth. :) You call do all this in about 3/4 of a day, if you take your time.

Another thing you can do if you'd like, is visit Hume Lake - it's a small lake, used in the old days for milling, and there is a beach there, and you can rent kayaks (1 person), canoes (2 persons), or rowboats (up to 4 I think).

Yosemite is about 2-3 hours from Sequoia. The Wawona campground is about 15 minutes from the entrance to Yosemite on the 41. You won't see that famous tunnel picture of the valley until you get there, and that is about 45 minutes from Wawona - the reason so long is because you're up in the mountains and the road is winding. When you get to the Yosemite entrance, you can turn right & go to Mariposa Grove, which is a grove of Giant Seqouias ... take the tram to the end and walk back - very nice. If you turn left, you'll get to Wawona - beautiful hotel built in the 20's on your right, the river and campground to your left. There is a little waterfall there & you can hike to the base in about a half hour, or you can hike for 8 hours to the top.

One of the days you're there, you HAVE to go to Glacier Point - you'll get a beautiful view of the high Sierras, and you'll also see the Valley spread out before you.... In one of my links (I think Yosemite 2000), you can see the view, and I show where Upper Pines is - hold the cursor over the picture.

Southern California Beach -- A lot of people like Huntington Beach, and they have fire pits there - great at sunset. I like Newport Beach because the waves aren't as rough, and nicer for swimming. It's a nice atmosphere, and there is a restaurant at the end of the pier, if you'd like to eat there, or you can go to Joe's Crab Shack, or any other of the several places there.
