Do any of your kids have the leapster? How is it I am thinking maybe for my five year olds birthday present? Thanks!!!

Santa brought it for my 5 yr old for Christmas. She loves it. The games are educational but fun, and it can take getting dropped and smacked around. It was her fav gift for Xmas.

My DS (now 8) had a Leapster when he was five & loved it. Then one year later he got a Nintendo DS & hasn't picked it up since. My DD then start to play with the Leapster & loved until Santa brought her very own pink DS and again, hasn't picked up the Leapster since. I think the Leapster is a great educational system, but I don't think it has the long term enjoyment factor that the DS has. The DS is definitely more expensive, but again may be the better investment as there are so many more games available. Just something to consider. I'm sure your child will enjoy which ever you chose.

If you have a Kohls near you, they were clearing them out not too long ago. I got them for $31, and that was about a month ago. If they still have some left they would probably be even cheaper now.

My 5 year old has it and loves it. She has had it maybe a year and half? She figures out how to play all the games by herself too. It holds up well, she got some water on it and has even dropped it. She has learned alot from it which has helped her in school. My neighbor's son has Nintendo DS (he is 6) and she said he wasn't ready for it. He could play all the games but he drops it too much and now it doesn't work.

Thanks guys I think its a go. I thought about the DS but my little guy is a clutz:lmao: I heard Target has them on sale so my DH will pick them up on his way home. I have changed my mind and I think it will be an Easter present for both DS's.

That's funny - this is our exact same experience. Although DD now 6 will still use it occasionally for the princess game - she finds it "easier" than her DS princess game. Of course once she picks it up, DS will usually decide he NEEDS it for the sonic math game.

Yep, Leapster is good for around age 5 or 6, but I think they may quickly out grow it. You also have to be sure to get the games that are age appropriate - not too easy and not too hard. I got my 6 year old one for Christmas but bought him some of the more advance games that I thought he could grow into, but a couple of the games left him really frustrated at first so I was a bit dissapointed he didn't play with it as much as I expected.

DS got one when he was 5 too & still enjoys it (he's almost 7). He & DD9 both play it, mainly in the car. They also have older Nintendo handhelds (whatever came after Color) and they like those too.

I know when DS got it at age 5, it was his big fav for a very long time, I hope yours will love it too!

DS 4 Loves his Leapster! We have had it a year and it has held up great. Toys R Us sometimes has the games buy one get one free!
I highly recommend it.

We bought a leapster for DD when she was 5 and she loved it. Now that she's 7, she's graduated to playing more games on the computer, but still brings her leapster in the car for long trips. I highly recommend it!
