I swear I posted this last night, but can't find it anywhere.....

DD has gone to daycare for 2 yrs but it is a pretty small daycare, so I have not had to worry about labeling her clothes. Now she has started preschool and they want everything labeled with the children's names. I thought I would be able to find some iron on labels or something like that at Walmart or Joann Fabrics but no such luck. What does everyone use to label their kids clothes and where do you get it???

Also, this is kind of paranoid, but I worry about having dd's name on things. I have read on different child safety sites about not having a full name because a stranger could then call your child by their name and the child would think it was okay because they "knew" them. Do you put the full name, first name, last name...any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

I just take a fine point Sharpie and write our last name on the tags inside the clothes. No worries about someone easily seeing them. They mainly want things labeled in case they get lost/left behind.

On other items (backpack, strollers, etc), I use a label maker and put more info (cell #, etc).

I'm a preschool teacher and I usually tell parents just to use a sharpie and put a name or initials on the tag. If something doesn't have a tag write on the inside of the collar or on the waistband. A side note to the label everything, if you send sippy cups, or covered containers for lunch please put a name on the tops and bottoms, you'd be surprised how many kids have the same cups and lunch plates.
Sharpies are my best friend, especially at the begining of the year!

I have ordered personalized labels from bunkline.com and also use a sharpie. Sometimes the iron on labels are better and I use them for daycamp where there are more kids.

My kids have somewhat unusual first and last names, so sometimes I cut the labels in half and only use the first or last name part. Typically on stuff that's going to my nephew with the same last name (who also has a little brother) I use the last name part, or just write our last name with a sharpie.

If you google labels or camp labels there are dozens of sites that will prepare iron labels for you. I think I used Label Land. (http://www.label-land.com/)

As for the security issue, I totally understand your concern. My kids have a very unusual last name and I decided to order labels with just our last name on them. If you are concerned you could just go with a first initial. Although I just put our last name on it, it does creep me out a little that our last name is out there on clothing. (Especially when I start collecting out-grown clothes for goodwill).

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Edited to add: You should be somewhat comforted that a stranger generally won't be able to see labels that are ironed onto the inside of your children's clothing.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I did think of the sharpie markers, but thought that if I used labels, I could remove them when it came time to sell or give away the hand-me-downs. Maybe I will just use the marker on the tag.

We have a Brother Label Maker (which I LOVE!!!!) and a month ago I ordered the tape that is an iron-on label. Thought it was great that I could print whatever I wanted onto the tape then just iron it on. Not sure if it's removable of not though.

I always just use a sharpie on the clothing tag like others have said! As far as the security concern above, I wouldn't put a kid's first name on their backpack if they walk alone or wait alone at a bus stop for example. Your daughter looks kind of young-is she ever anywhere unattended? Also someone once pointed out to me that if the "stranger" just hung around us for a few minutes they would hear me saying my child's name anyway! I wouldn't worry about her name being inside the clothes.

I didn't know they had this! Where did you buy the tape?

I buy custom fabric labels from Sterling Labels online and use my sewing machine to sew them onto the seam allowances by the short end of the label. That way it is very easy to snip them out before I sell or donate the clothing.

I get them from stickerkid.com. They have been working out just fine for us. They also have that sticker that you can put on clothing (no iron needed) that comes in handy. Our oldest is now enrolled in the Fire Academy and uses still the plain personalized name labels from them.

www.mabelslabels.com makes labels that are dishwasher and washing machine safe. I stick them on the inside tags on my son's clothes, on his lunch containers and water bottles and use the shoe ones to label the inside of his shoes. I'm not too worried about people knowing his first name because as someone said up thread, if you stand behind us in line for 5 minutes you will know his name.

The OP is from 2007. I would hope that they have long since figured out how to label their kids clothes. :)

I know this is an older thread, but I came across it and have to mention Name Bubbles. I have used them on all my kid's clothes for years and they've been a life changer because all 4 of my kids were notorious for leaving their stuff behind (wonder where they get it from, lol me). They do have iron-on labels for kids and the peel and stick ones too. If anyone comes across this give Name Bubbles a shot it's saved me money and time!
