How much would you pay someone to come to your house to help with Word processing and other minor computer related issues? This is in the St. Louis area in Missouri.

What do you mean by "help with"? Is this installation and set up, customizations, or just doing the typing?

Well, my best friend always gives me jars of home-canned green beans as payment for when I help her family with setting up, fixing, and doing computer things. (Her canned green beans are the best I've ever tasted!) I got a lot when I did the video presentation for her DD"s high school graduation last May. :rotfl: I also get lots of veggie goodness all summer. Yeah, I'm always looking for things I can suggest that she "needs" done for her computers.

Seriously, it depends on what the person is doing. If they are setting up the computer and installing programs, call Best Buy or similar stores and ask them what their price is for the same service.

You could always ask the person what they think they should get paid.

I used to work for a company that served a suburb of Atlanta. Just so you have some perspective, here is what we charged: For all work (at our office, at a residence, at a business in town, and for a business out of town), we charged $75 an hour. For in town (think inside the county), we charged a $35 service/travel charge. For people out of town, the service/travel charge was calculated based on distance. We would provide hard quotes, but those rates were usually for larger jobs.

So, here's my usual advice when I get your question. Ask around... I guarantee someone you know can recommend a computer guy or a local business. I tend to steer people away from retail chain stores and their computer services. I've found that they tend to be very hit or miss; when they are in the "miss" category, good luck getting your money back or even finding anyone in the store that will honestly listen to you and get your problem fixed. Local Mom & Pop businesses rely much more on word of mouth and are going to be more likely to want to help.

My DH is an IT Director and does work on the side. He comes to you and charges $50 for most minor repairs, etc. If he can't fix it (has never happened, he's the best!) he won't charge. Major projects he usually charges $50 and hour but if it's going to take several hours he will reduce the rate per hour. He gives the cost up front so you know.

Too bad you aren't closer, I'd send him over. He really is the best! :goodvibes
