OT - I just had so much fun (NOT) with my iPad!

So yesterday I bought a new app. So I plugged in my iPad, and iTunes told me there was a new version of the OS. So I downloaded & installed it. And it bricked my iPad.

It got *almost* done, then, at the very end, said it couldn't finish because it got an error. iTunes ended up telling me it detected an iPad in Recovery mode, and that I needed to restore it. I restored it, over and over again, rebooting my PC, rebooting iTunes, deleting & re-downloading the update, etc, etc, as the online forums suggested. Nothing worked. Each time, it would go through the restore, verify the software, then fail at the end of verifying the restore. It kept going back to the message saying iTunes detected an iPad in Recovery mode....

I *finally* gave up & made an appointment with the Apple Store Genius Bar for this morning. The guy said he was going to do something "special" to get it into a different Recovery mode. It was one of the things I'd already tried. He tried a few different times & ways to restore it, no luck. So he looked up my iPad. I'd bought it April 5th of last year. Out of warranty. BUT, since it was obviously something wrong with the iPad or it's OS (and nothing I'd done) he invoked some sort of grace period & they replace my iPad for free! It's a little sad, because I loved that iPad, but the new one is nice.

I brought it home, restored it with the last backup, but it's having issues with some of my apps, so I'm having to re-download a bunch of them. I'll have to reload all my music & videos, since I manage those manually (not synced, so they weren't backed up.)

All in all, it could have been worse, but WHAT A PAIN IN THE ***! iTunes sucks. I *LOVE* my iPad, but I hate iTunes with a burning passion.

Glad they could replace your iPad since it was off warranty. Did they give you an iPad 2? That would be really cool. I love my iPad and would be very sad without it.

No, they gave me another original iPad, exactly like the one I had. An iPad 2 would have been way too much to hope for. I was freaking at the thought of being without mine!

I had this same problem with my iphone4 and a 3GS on the last update. It just took a simple change to the registry to rectify the problem. I realize this is kind of advanced for most users, but I just wanted to share.

Can you give more details? I'm really afraid this same thing is going to happen the next time I update the OS on my iPad...

Think iTunes sucks? Try using Zune. PITA. I've got a 3gs but I use my Zune for podcasts and music. Why in the world Apple and MS just can't make it so you can use Explorer to add/delete content, I'll never know.

Because that would be too easy lol. And apple does not want you using a microsoft product if they can help it.

Amen! This is the first time I have ever heard ANYONE express a hatred for iTunes that rivals mine. It's needlessly complicated when trying to sync any files for non-Apple usage and completely inconvenient when managing a music library (ripping existing collection for use on iPod or iPhone requires countless hours in tagging and naming properly). That said, it's great for temporary files (like podcasts) that you keep for a while and then delete. But it befuddles me as to how anyone can manage their entire music collection on any Apple product--unless their iPod, iPhone, or Mac Book is the only method by which they listen to music and iTunes is the only method by which they purchase music.

I actually have an iPhone and a MacBook Air but not a single song is loaded to any of them. Like OP, I love the products but loathe iTunes. Thank you for letting me know I'm not alone.

Can you give more details? I'm really afraid this same thing is going to happen the next time I update the OS on my iPad...

Sorry, I wasn't thinking. It's the hosts file that you have to edit (remove apple). Do a google search, it should turn up. I will try to have a look tomorrow for it.

It just really kills me that I have this fantastic technology that is brought to its knees by crappy software. So unfair! I wouldn't touch iTunes with a 10 foot pole if I didn't have to.

I do soley use iTunes for my music and I hate it!!! Last time I updated my OS I lost all my pictures so now I'm too afraid to update the OS BUT I can no longer share music with my DD's. It won't bring up their library's.

Either I buy it twice or skip it (which I usually do).
