I am trying to figure out which size to buy my daughter for fall/winter. She just turned 2, is around 27 pounds and is currently in a 2T. Some 24 mos could probably still fit. How long do kids stay in a 2T?

Depends. DD is now 3 and can still wear 2T. Now pants/jeans she wears 3T because she needs the length. She wore 3T in the winter but she's taller than most kids her age.

DS is the complete opposite. He isn't even wearing the size he should. But he's smaller than most kids. I don't usually buy ahead for him. I learned my lesson when he wore preemie clothes for longer than I care to admit. He never got to wear most of his 0-3 month clothes we had bought. I also don't buy clothes for him unless he's with me. I've had to return too many outfits because they were too big.

My kids not long. For the most part I always skipped 2t's and went from 24months to 3t's. If you measure 24months and 2t's there usually isnt much of a difference.

DS just turned 3. He's 38 inches and 38 pounds. Some clothes he can still wear 2T, like shorts, but he grew out of 2T shirts and pants around February (at 2 years, 7 months). His usual size now is 4T.

For a winter coat or snowsuit, I'd buy 3T for your dd.

My son is in 18 and 24 months. Hes 20 months old. He still wears some 12 month shorts. Hes tall for his age and he weighs about 24lbs.

My son wore 3T for a year. (I skipped 2T as well) My youngest dd wore 3T for 6 months. My kids wear Gymboree, which tends to be a bit more generous in sizing. If you are truly worried, I would buy a size ahead. My motto is better bigger than smaller.
Do check out some of the kids clothing boards, they are great for advice-like sizing on brands.

DD was in 2T forever... well, it seemed like it, but it was probably a little over a year. She's very petite (curse of having 2 short parents :) ) and she grew into 2T during the summer. By the next summer, she was probably ready for 3T in length, but not around the waist. Since it was summer, it was easy to keep her in 2T because we didn't have to worry about pants being too short. So I moved her into 3T in the fall when we were switching back into long pants and long sleeved shirts.

Of course, brand also plays a big role in size. At one point, I think I had her wearing anything from 18 months to 3T depending upon the brand and how big they ran. Some brands were longer than others and I could get away with a smaller size because she's also small around the waist.

my son kept getting skinnier and taller.
He is 3 1/2 and still wears some 2T shorts because he is so slim.
He however is a 5T ength.

Once they hit 2T they really slow down.
They generally start to wear their age.

My daughter who is 16 months still can fit 6-12 months.:confused3

Even though 24 mos and 2T sound very similar in size, a sales associate once told me that 24 mos will fit a little looser because room is alloted for a diaper!
I have noticed that with DD who is 2. Some of her 24 mo pants are certainly bigger in the rear and waist than the 2T.
Hope this helps a tad!!

My son will be 4 in September and he is still wearing some 18 month shorts! He has yet to wear any shorts or pants in 3T. It depends on the child and the brand of the clothes. My son is the smallest one in his class, but it's getting tough to find him the clothes he wants in his size.

Both of my kids were faster-than-normal growers. They both (one boy, one girl, 4 years apart in age) wore size 2T at 12 months of age, were in 3T by 18 months, 4T by 24 months.....etc. Neither slowed down until about age 3/4 years. Now DS is 10 years old, wears size 12/14 with size 10 men's shoe! DD is 6 years old and is wearing size 7/8 and hovering between a size 2/3 shoe. I learned very quickly with my 2 to never buy clothes ahead as it wouldn't do me any good (although my Dad once bought my DS a size 12 month cute Pooh outfit when DS was born thinking it would be cute on him when he was a year old.....DS wore it to get his 6 month pictures in.....and it barely still fit! LOL). If I were you, I'd wait a bit and see if she has another growth spurt before cold weather sets in. Or just buy a few things in 2T and 3T so you'll have something in both to have on hand without too much in either if it ends up not being the size you need.

Thanks for all the replies! We just went to the dr. today. She is 26 pounds and 34 inches. Does that help in figuring it out? These children clothes boards that are talked about, does anyone have a web address? Thanks!

I have 2 skinny little guys. The youngest is the slimmest and also tall for his age. He will be 4 next month, but I still have him wear some 24 mos/2T clothes. For example- swim trunks are so hard for him. When they get wet, they sag so I need something that fits relatively snug around the waist. That usually leaves me with 24 mo/2T. However, since he's tall they also look a little funny. I try to look for that size shorts/trunks that are supposed to be long shorts- that way they look more normal for him.

Old Navy and Gap have slim sizes with adjustable waists for regular shorts. We try to use those as often as possible.

Here is the chart from Lands End.

Size Height (in) Waist (in) Inseam (in) Weight
2T 33 - 35 20 12 1/2 27 - 29 lbs.
3T 36 - 38 20 1/2 14 1/4 30 - 33 lbs.
4T 39 - 41 21 15 3/4 34 - 38 lbs.
5T 42 - 44 21 1/2 16 1/4 39 - 44 lbs.

The formatting won't work once it's posted. The first line should read 2T, height 33-35 inches, waist 20 inches, inseam 12 1/2 inches and weight 27-29 inches. 3T is height 36-38 inches, waist 20 1/2 inches, inseam 14 1/4 inches and weight 30-33 pounds.

we get the clothes with the adjustable bands.
i love gap jeans.
gymboree is always cut big.

i find the cheaper clothing tends to run small and very not true to size.
