Hi everyone. We are expecting our 2nd daughter in 2 weeks and are having such a hard time coming up with a name. Our first daughter is named " Scarlett" and her middle name is Kayla. We really love both of those names. Anyone have any suggestions for us? Thanks so much...who knew this would be so hard this time around!

Congratulations on your upcoming arrival!!

I think it really does depend on your last name, your cultural background, a lot of other things.

When naming our kids, here are a few things we kept in mind:
- potential nicknames. I love Gabrielle, but hate Gabby. So no Gabrielle for us.

- ease of pronounciation. We're both teachers, and have had our share of names we've struggled to say. I always feel so bad for my kids when I have difficulty learning to say their names. I wanted names that their teachers, and preschool classmates could say.

- Monogram... you want to make sure it's nothing that will cause them grief.

- run on words. My niece wanted Amanda Lynne, until she realized that, said quickly, it became "a mandolin."

- history. My son is adopted from Korea. The name he arrived with is his middle name. We kept it because it's a part of his identity.

What we ended up doing for my older daughter was going through the name book. I made a list of first names I could live with and middle names I could live with, then passed the list on to my husband. He made the choice from there. Funny, but we had no problem with the other two.

While I do agree with this, I don't think nicknames always just happen if you don't want them to. We have an Andrew and we have always called him/introduced him as Andrew. Nobody has ever tried to call him Andy. Though, for some reason, some of his friends call him Bob when they are out at recess. But they are 10 yr old boys, so I'm sure it's a silly thing (that he loves) and won't stick.

I have two boys, but if they had been girls, one would have been Amy Caroline -- I LOVE the name Caroline -- and the other would have been Hannah Elizabeth. By the time I was pregnant with the second one, I decided I liked the name Hannah better than Amy, so we made the change.

I'm sure you'll come up with the perfect name for your new little one. I wanted to recommend a site I thought was pretty cool when we were naming our third child. It's called Nameberry (or something like that) and you can find it if you google it. Very interesting information...

Just to give you a few suggestions...here's how we named our little ones.
First Child (girl) - took part of my name and part of my husband's name and smushed them together. It's not a made up name, but it's not common either. It's in a bunch of the name books, but it is an actual name with a nice meaning.

Second Child (boy) - We each made a list and any name that appeared on both lists made it to the next round. I think there were like seven names. It was also right in the middle of football season, so the name we ended up with is similar to that of a famous football player (and former Redskin!!). It's a nice Irish name so I'm pleased with it.

Third Child (girl) - Spent five days not knowing and lots of tears because we simply could not agree. Our oldest child recommended a name from our favorite family Christmas movie. We thought and thought and decided it would be a perfect fit for this baby after we got a very encouraging sign from her (She waved at us!!).

All my kids have my maiden name as their middle name (even though the DH doesn't like it), but I insisted because my Dad had no sons and my nephew also has this as his middle. I thought it would be a nice way to keep the name in the family.

Good luck to you and congratulations!!!! :cheer2:

I think of Gone with the Wind with the name Scarlett, the other lead in the book is Melanie. Just a thought.

and congrats on a new family member coming.

To the pp - Eureka - I see you are from my neck of the woods. :cool1:

Just wanted to say "hi"!!! I hear we are finally getting a break from this awful heat wave today. I say bring on the rain, my grass is looking something terrible.

With all three of our kids we used this book:

The Baby Name Wizard, Revised 3rd Edition: A Magical Method for Finding the Perfect Name for Your Baby

It's awesome. Gives suggestions for sibling names, their meanings, popularity, origin and much more.

If you search the book on Amazon you can see sample pages. It's the coolest book. Good luck.

Just a suggestion with naming a second child... Be sure to say both kids' names together, since you'll probably be using them together a lot! See how they flow when you say "Scarlett and....."

I love the name Scarlett and think it's just different enough. That's what we aimed for. Something that was a little different, unique, but no so far out there that people had trouble pronouncing it. When we named Aidan 13 years ago, it was very uncommon and we loved it! Since then, it's become one of the most popular boys names in America. Guess we were trend setters!

As for nicknames, that's actually what we used with our second son. We loved the name "Eli" and knew that's what we would call him, not Elijah or Elias. So his legal name is Eli. Still haven't heard many of those. But--funny aside--I'm amazed at how many people can't read that name! It never occurred to me at all that anyone would mess that up. But at doctors' offices or anywhere where they're reading his name off a paper, we've had numerous people pronounce it "Ellie" as in a girl's name! Really?????

Some of the girls names we considered were Kyra, Claudia, Gabrielle (Gabby).

I don't know why girls' names are so hard to come up with! We had a hard time, too. Our son has an unusual name, so we needed an unusual name for our daughter. I checked the Social Security's website of 1000 most popular names, and started at the bottom and worked my way up until I found one we both liked.
For both of my kids, their middle names are family names. DS's middle name comes from DH's grandfather, and one of DD's middle names comes from my grandmother.

I also recommend this book. It lists recommended siblings names as well. Suggestions for Scarlett are: Amber Ava Chloe Elizabeth Georgia Harper Juliet Lily Molly Natalie Olivia Ruby Savannah Stella Violet

Since Scarlett is a name for a red color, how about choosing a girls name that means some other color like: Violet, Lavender, Jade, Rose, Lilac?

My niece's name is Hadley Mae. It sounds very southern, like Scarlett. I also have a niece named Scarlett. :rotfl:

Congrats!

I'm always partial to family names. Is, for example, your mother's or grandmother's maiden name an appropriate first or middle name? I have my paternal grandmother's maiden name as my middle name and it has always been so special to me. My first name was after my maternal grandmother.

That's what we did. My DD's name is a variation on my DH's grandmother's name. Her middle name is my last name.

Emerald.
It's different, but everyone knows how to spell it. :) That's why we picked it. Congratulations on the upcoming arrival of your daughter!

I like the "color" theme, too. Some other color ideas: Ruby, Hazel, Sienna, Sage, Amber.

Happy baby naming! I only got to name boys ;). If we had a girl, DH and I both loved the name Kendal. --Katie

I have a Lilly Alon *soft A* ~ Alon is my paternal grandmother's name backwards ~ Nola, she passed away when I was barely pregnant with L :(

I'm also partial to ~
Sloane
Claire
Madeline
Brie
Elle
