Our DS is in cub scouts and has a father son cake contest next week. We have a decorating design of a reproduction of the pinewood derby, but can't seem to come up with a cake recipe that DH and DS both agree with. They don't want plain chocolate or white cake, but the cake has to be pretty sturdy for us to stack, to be able to make the race track out of. I am a box cake mix baker only and I am not supposed to help them any how, so they are on their own. Does anyone have a simple but yummy cake recipe two guys could probably handle?

I would try using a pound cake. I think it would be more firm than a regular cake.

I agree that a pound cake is probably your best choice. BTW, do you have a picture of the design that they are using (or instructions)? Our Pack has a cake night too - it is not a father/son contest (although that sounds like an idea for us to consider) it is more like a raffle/auction, with the goal being to have the "coolest" cake so it is "sold" first. I am always on the lookout for a different cub scout design to use. TIA and good luck to your "boys"!

I agree. I always use a pound cake recipe when I make DS's birthday cakes (which are usually birthday cake sculpture). It just holds up better.

I remember we did a father/son cake auction for scouts. We purchased new sand bucket and shovel, made a chocolate cake, a bit of pudding in the middle, more cake, more pudding, then ground up oreos and then gummy worms and then we put the shovel in the top. I think it ended up selling for like $56, lol. At least it was for a good cause. I was actually thinking of doing mini versions of this, this summer for my ds's birthday

I 2nd the pound cake, its much sturdier:)
