OT: fridge with freezer on the bottom?

My 16 year old side-by-side fridge is on the verge of dying, so we're planning on buying a new one soon. Does anyone have one of the newer fridges with the freezer on the bottom? Sears has a nice one on sale this week with French doors, freezer on the bottom, water in the door, and ice maker on the bottom.

Do you like the freezer on the bottom, or is it a pain? We have a deep freezer in the basement, so most of our frozen stuff is down there.

That is the only type of fridge my grandmother has ever had. She loves having the freezer on the bottom. She also has a chest freezer so just keep the everyday things in the fridge freezer and you should be fine.

We have one just like that. Don't remember the brand, but french doors for the fridge, freezer on the bottom with ice maker, and then in the basement we have a chest freezer.

We're very happy with it. We keep stuff we're using in the next couple weeks in the freezer and our more bulk freezer storage in the basement. Our freezer has a top level that you slide back when you open the freezer, and then a lower level. We keep it pretty organized, esp. because we keep most stuff in the basement.

We have one with a freezer on the bottom (drawer style). It's the only kind my DM will buy. It works great. My DSis also has one of the armoire types with the bottom freezer. She also loves hers as well. Personally I can't stand the side by side ones, not enough room in the freezer (width wise).

Love mine, it is so nice opening the fridge section and not having to bend way down to see what is on the bottom shelf.

I will never get another fridge with the freezer on top for that feature alone.

I've had a "freezer on the bottom" since about forever. We've had ours for aobut 17 years, and thne when I still lived at my parents, probably for about 10 years prior ot that. NOw granted, the bottom freezers now have become drawers, where mine was a door, not a drawer.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the bottom freezer. In the fridge section - everything is waist level or higher, and very convenient, whereas, we probably do not even go into our freezer more than 1 time a day.

Since our freezer is about the same age as yours...we have been casually looking at them too. I will definitely be getting another bottom freezer.

We also have a separate freezer in the basement.

We recently got the freezer on the bottom after always of having it on the top. I absolutely LOVE IT!! DH was soo against it- he was afraid of ds3 of opening the freezer and causing problems.

We have had it just over 1 yr and ds3 hasn't even been able to pull open the drawer! Ours does not have the water in the door. I didn't want it- to me it took up too much space that we could use. We do have an ice maker in the pull out drawer but it isn't hooked up. We would have to replace the orginal piping from the basement and I am just not worried about it now.

We use freezer mates from Tupperware to store almost all of our frozen items. I made sure to bring one along when we were looking. They fit perfectly. We do have a freezer in the basement so most item are keep down there and I replenish the upstairs freezer when it gets low. I do have to say sometimes the freezer does get messy but it is bound to happen.

I do however LOVE the refrig on the top. It is soo much easier to find stuff that we need. No more bending down and whacking your head on the freezer door as u stand up. I love the double doors too bc I only have to open one side to get something.

Another thing I noticed is that I don't need to use baking soda in the refrigerator or freezer area to absorb odors. We don't have any!!

Ours is an LG stainless steel. We got it at Sears outlet for an awesome price. Soo glad I wandered further in the outlet instead of just staying with the traditional style. Like I said DH was soo against it. I had to measure and prove to him that the doors wouldn't hit the stove area and that it would fit.
He was surprised that he actually likes it!

Someone above mentioned that you generally open your freezer once or twice a day...I never quite thought about it, but that is definitely true. I'm going to run by Sears tomorrow to take a peak at it, and make sure it's what I really want.

Add us to the list of those who love it. When we bought it 13+ years ago we got some "are you sure you don't want a side by side" comments and I knew I didn't. I have never regretted it. It is starting to go, freezing things it shouldn't and we are looking at the french door type to replace.

I will never not have the freezer of the bottom, It is used so much less often, why would it be ont he top?

Our fridge just died a few months ago and I got a french door with bottom freezer. I LOVE it. I previously had a side by side and I find I can fit so much much stuff in the bottom freezer. I don't why...it's the same size fridge as the one that died...maybe because I can just stack stuff. I absolutely LOVE it though, especially not having to squat down to see what I have in the bottom of the fridge that usually left to rot because I never got down there enough. The only real downside is that I have a ton of condiments and I don't have as much shelf space on the french doors for those little jars. Other than that it's great.

I considered the french door, but decided to get another side by side instead. When I looked at the freezer square footage for french door vs. S/S, I decided i needed the additional storage in the freezer. However, look carefully at the design of the icemakers. We got the one with the ice maker on the freezer DOOR, this frees up 2 shelves in the freezer.

We got a Samsung, in the Platinum (no fingerprints!)

I have a side by side in my kitchen and a french door fridge in the garage. I also have a large upright freezer in the basement for bulk freezing. While I like the french door fridge, I find that my side by side has much more freezer space and can hold A LOT more. I also like the fact that my side by side fridge has water/ice thru the door. I would miss the ice thru the door immensely if we were to switch the locations of the fridges. I guess it just depends on which features are the most important to you...

I love my fridge with the freezer on the bottom. Freezer opens just like the fridge.

Mine is a Fridgedaire (Sears) but was purchased at a seconds store (dents, etc). It cost less than my Maytag upstairs, but I had to get black (to match the stoves and dishwasher) and there are few available. I wish that one had the freezer on the bottom too.

I have the LG with French doors, freezer drawer on the bottom. Love it! I bought mine on eBay as a refurb. There were small dents on the side and a tiny one on the front (we have a magnetic picture over it, the dent is the size of the end of a pencil eraser. The same fridge was $3,000 at Home Depot. I paid $700! Mine is black to match my other appliances.

Before you buy, see if your state has any energy efficiency appliance rebate money available. Ohio will give you $100 for a new qualifying fridge.

Also, Discover is offering 5% bonus cashback on home improvement stores till the end of June.

My fridge too has been ill, so I googled "how long does a fridge last" and was surprised to find 14 years on average. Sad.

My new fridge - French door, freezer on bottom - just arrived Saturday and my only wish is that I'd bought it a year or two ago. Being able to see everything in the fridge area is wonderful! There are six little shelves along the doors, as well as a can dispenser thingie, and I love the organization already - Indian condiments on one shelf, and then another for Thai, one for Italian, one for mustards, veggie condiments (capers and sun dried tomatoes and the like) and a place for ketchups. A place for everything and everything in its place makes me so happy!

We do have a dedicated upright freezer as well, to hold bulk meat purchases and home-frozen veggies. The old fridge right now is being kept in the mudroom to be a beer and wine fridge. We'll see if we keep it, but with summer and hot weather upon us it's nice to have.

Love my freezer on the bottom. Hate my Kenmore though. I have only had it for 4 yrs and it is already dying. Look up reviews before you buy from Sears. I found out that mine is a major complaint. When I have to replace I will probably buy another freezer on the bottom model, but will buy LG most likely.

We bought a beautiful french door/freezer on the bottom/ice/water in door and had to send it back because it was just about 1/2 inch too big on each side. Apparently the size of standards refrigerators is growing. Our house (which is only 12 years old) has a built in spot for a refrigerator and it wasn't big enough. So pay attention to measurements if you have a confined space for your 'fridge.

I ended up paying 200.00 more to order a smaller one with fewer bells and whistles!

However, I still love it! The french doors really are great and I can fit everything in my freezer. It has two drawers and then two spaces underneath. For summer, I've dedicated one drawer to popsicles of all kinds (mostly sugar free and natural fruit--but some fun stuff too). Now my dd8 and dd5 can grab popsicles for the neighborhood crowd that runs through here much more easily! So...they love the new 'fridge too!

We replaced the 23yo side-by-side Kenmore (which was original to our house) with a French-door Kenmore Elite in January. We really like it! Several yrs ago they had issues, but Consumer Reports rated the newer Kenmores very well, and also the Samsung. But the better sale price won us over to the Kenmore (manufactured by LG).

We like the bottom freezer more than I thought we would. We wouldn't give up the ice/water dispenser. And we're happy that this model has the icemaker is in the door, not taking up a fridge shelf and not in the freezer compartment.

We did get the longest warranty they offered... so many electronic parts in new appliances, that it's not likely any needed repair would be cheap or easy. And if you have an issue that requires X amount of repair visits within any 12mo, they will REPLACE the fridge with a new one!

But like a PP mentioned, be sure you measure your available space first, and check the dimensions of the new one before you make a deal!
