My dd is going to her 3rd overnight camp this summer. She asked if we could buy a footlocker instead of bringing the suitcase this year. Is this the norm for summer camp? I know the camp encourages everyone to get footlockers and suggested buying from everythingsummercamp.com.

What do your kids bring for camp? Is it worth buying! Thanks!

How long is she staying at camp?

I don't know if the Footlocker is worth buying just for camp. Both of my boys took them to college though and my oldest is currently using his as a coffee table in his apartment. So they do have lasting power if you think there is enough of a future need too.

She goes for a week every summer. I don't think it will have much use past that. Of course I have two more kids behind her who may use it.

My DS goes to camp every year. I think all the boys just bring duffel bags. They slide easily under the bed to stay out of the way.

I am guessing though, that since she is asking for a footlocker, that must be what most of the other girls have.

I agree with PP...I have seen them at Walmart.
Here is a nice wheeled one. They also have one without wheels for $10 less. You could just check at your local store too to see the prices.

DS was required to have one for boyscout camp quite a few years ago. He used it a few years and it still looks and functions fine. I would go ahead and invest in a neutral color one that younger siblings can also use in the years to come. I really can not remember where we got ours.

Is it possible that the footlockers get used like a nightstand? I.e. To hold their flashlights? Perhaps an alarm clock?

Our summer camp actually discouraged people from bringing them. They didn't outright ban them, but when you've got 8 bunk beds in a cabin, there's little room for 16 trunks; if people hadn't brought suitcases that could slide under the beds nobody would have been able to walk around.

My son uses a regular sized Rubbermaid storage tub at camp. I did notice that the girls were a lot more organized though (at least at the camp he attends). Several last year had the 3 drawer storage thingies, the kind plastic kind with wheels. They're tall enough to act as a nightstand and have a small enough footprint that they can go between the bunks easily.
