Latigo Dude Ranch was recommended to us for a great family vacation. However it is $2300 per person and seems like a deluxe version of what we are looking for. Can anyone recommend a place that is less expensive? (I mean alot less expensive.)

I don't know where you are looking to vacation (like what state), but I know that Rocking Horse Ranch is not very expensive and from what I hear it is quaint but nice.

Good luck! Sounds like a fun vacation idea!

In my neck of the woods (Colorado) I've visited two:

Peaceful Valley Ranch

Family oriented, pretty good food, great horseback riding accommodations and a quaint atmosphere. It's very close to Estes Park (little mountain town, touristy) and Rocky Mountain National Park.
They have both hotel-style rooms and family cabins.

Gold Lake

More adult oriented. Absolutely beautiful. Absolutely wonderful food. Lots of hiking, great horseback riding but not as horseback riding intense as Peaceful Valley. They are close to Nederland and Boulder, and about 1 hour from Estes Park/Rocky Mountain National Park.

They are more expensive (but not as expensive as you are talking about) and have restrictions on when kids can stay there, I think.
