We just had a flood in our basement- everything not in Rubbermaid is ruined.*mostly junk but a few things that I am very upset about. But I want to dump all the wet cardboard and boxes before the mold comes. Any idea about how much they go for? We are still pumping out water. But I think we have stopped the water- A pipe seperated from our well tank. AARRRGHHHH!! It was about an inch of water throughout the basement.

Sorry about your basement!

I just read an article in the Bottom Line newsletter about remodeling, and it said a dumpster rental should be $300-$500. It probably varies throughout the country, and I don't know if they come in different sizes. Sorry I can't help more!

Thank you I just needed some frame of reference when I call. That helps a lot. Thank you. Hey at least it is an unfinished basement. I would be real mad if it was my berber carpet under water.....

We rented one last spring... it was about $350

We just rented one (re-did our roof), in Massachusetts. We rented a 15yd dumpster, delivered and picked up for $365. We were allowed 12 tons in that dumpster, and there would have been additional charges if we went overweight.

We called around to 4 or 5 different places, and found there was only about a $25 or so difference between them all.

Guess it depends on where you live, they will place one at your home here and charge only for the times they actually dump it, about 65 dollars per pick up. We are sure fortunate in Illinois.

we got a dumpster last fall while re-doing our kitchen. Can't remember the size but we rented for 7 days then extended 3 days, and the total was around $375 or so. That's in New England.

It definitely depends where you live. Here, we got one from the county (we called the public works place) and they dropped it off and picked it up 3 days later and I think we only paid $70 for the whole time. (maybe not even that but I can't remember exactly)

Have you thought about 1-800-got-junk? I used them last weekend to cart off roofing tiles and some yard waste and their prices were very reasonable. They only charge you for the amount of room your items take up in the truck and their labor is included in the charge. They haulded away 3 35 gallon trash cans full, about 10 large garbage bags, a towering wheelbarrow and a few large tree branches for $118. The best part was they did all the work. They will quote you a price up front and only do the work if the price is agreeable. My initial estimate was about $50 higher so I was only going to have them take the roofing tiles since everything else could go in our weekly trash pick up if needed but they lowered the price and took what I wanted. I would use them again in a heartbeat. Much less expensive and better for my back than renting a dumpster.

Hi! The same thing happened to us this weekend! The only difference is that we had a finished basement! Treadmill, office and "family room" all soaked. We ripped up rugs and cut out 2 feet of drywall all the way around! It's been real fun... Anyway we called today for a dumpster and it was pretty close to $400.00. (We are in the PA suburbs) I said no way! I might try the 1-800-got-junk that someone else mentioned. I have a sofa sleeper, love seat, entertainment center, desk, coffee table and end tables along with about 50 other bags of toys and other goodies all in my driveway, so if anyone else has any other ideas I'll be listening!

My DH works for Waste Management here in Ny and they charge by weight plus a delivery fee. :sunny:

just a word of caution-read the fine print on any place you use! the only option around here is using the local garbage company-which we had no problem with when we did it a couple of times. however our neighbor got realy upset when in dropping the dumpster they cracked his driveway requiring a costly concrete job-and then got REALY upset when the company pointed out in the fine print that they were not liable for any damage to either private or public property during the delivery or pick-up of the dumpster-it was all on the 'renter's' part (so if they had cracked the sidewalk the city would have come after the homeowner to pay).

we had a bunch of junk to get rid of at one point-and found that renting a ryder or budget truck was a much cheaper alternative. we rented the truck for a few days and took loads to the local dump then swept and hosed it out. cost maybe $100 plus dump fees vs. 3 or 400 (and the dumpster companies around here will not take certain items-if they find them in the contents when they are dumping you get hit with a huge fine).

Try calling your township or municipal office first. In our township, you can have a dumpster delivered and picked up at your house for a 24 hour period....for FREE (including the dumping!!!)

Thank you for the great ideas. TinkerBrie I am so sorry for what you are going through also. So are you throwing everything that got wet out? I had some stuff in Rubbermaid and I am hoping that will save some of the stuff. We are waiting for the well company to come out now- it turns out a gasket blew that connect our well to the tank inside so water was just pouring into the house! Unfortunately we have a private garbage company-we are rural so we don't have a municipality that does garbage- we have to hire someone to take our trash. (don't get me started on that one the taxes we pay out here and we don't have sewer or trash pickup- or a police/fire department or... oh forget that) I don't want to call our garbage guys because my neighbor used them right before he moved and they left a huge gash in his driveway. But I am in the waiting mode right now... waiting for the well company, waiting for call backs on the dumpster, waiting for the dehumidifier to fill up again.... can somebody tell that to my 4 kids though :rotfl2: They think it is a party today. Woohoo no showers no teeth brushing!

I just paid about 450$ for a 20 yard dumpster in northern NJ. I get to keep it for a week.

As an aside, if you are making an insurance claim, the cost of the dumpster should be part of your claim. Also, call your insurance company if you are making a claim, they may have service providers that they can recommend for preferential rates.

That's the $64,000 question. Do we make a claim or not? I guess with the cost of the dumpster and the well repair we should? any ideas
Oh and we are in NJ.
