Yeh the new ones, people take for granted that they have to replace them in a few years. Our dinosaur aged washer/dryer hasn't needed much repair and we're apprehensive on replacing it since we know the new models will fail within a few years. Just a fact of life that "things aren't what they used to be", I guess..

I work at a place that sells extended warranties, I'm not going to mention the place because I'm not really wanting people to think I'm advertising for them. I tend to actually get the warranty for my own purchases, because you never know what's going to happen after the regular warranty is finished. Granted, it costs extra at the time of purchase, but it can really save you a ton of money if you have problems.

Me too, I usually buy extended warranty on everything for some reason. When I bought my first VCR it was expensive and bought the ex. warranty. It died, and could not find the warranty and called the place where I bought it from they told me the ex. war had just expired.

Well an hour later I found my ex. warranty and it was still good. Got the repairs done for free.

My car warranty expired JUST before something went wrong that would have been fixed on the warranty. Like a week before. Needless to say, when I got a new lease, I have the extended warranty on my car now.

I think I'd buy the extended warranty on a large appliance, but nothing of higher end technology. By the time it needs fixing theres something 10x better on the market..

I usually do 3 years extended on my cameras for that very reason. By the time 3 years roll around, I want something better at that point. Cameras don't usually change that drastically that I want to buy a new one every year, so I want to make sure my cameras will last me the full 3 years.

Many credit cards if you use them for the purchase will double the warranty on things too. Many people don't know about that!!
Check your credit cards!! I know our Master card does!

I doubt that any dealer would give you a free extended warranty beyond the year that the manufacturer offers.

Did you have the service call made? You don't necessarily need to have a Sears tech look at it. We've repaired our 10+ year old gas dryer repaired by an independant repairman a couple of times. Around $80-100 each time for whatever the problem was (think the service call was $45-50). Cheaper than replacement.

We always shop Sears for furniture and appliances and things have worked out for the most part. We've had a couple purchases that weren't to our satisfaction and after some "persuausion" on our part, they were made right. Both times things were not right immediately after purchase and we didn't take no for an answer.

As for extended warranties, we never buy them. I look at all the $50 here, and $250 there that I don't spend on extending and come out way ahead vs. any repair bills in my lifetime. They are a cash cow for retailers and the factory warranty will usually pick up most defects. Everyone has different comfort levels though.

Extended warranties are fine and dandy !:goodvibes
But, the fact remians that "They Don't Make Them Like They Used To"

People complain that the old appliances are ugly ,use more power and water and weigh a 1/2 ton.....but they last a lot longer than the Energuide ,low rated...light weight crap they make today. The fact is you shouldn't have to buy an extended warranty beyond the typical 1 year warranty...they should last a lot longer in the first place.

We have a washer that only lasted 8 years. We had purchased a 5yr extended warranty on it and in the first 7 years we had 5 service calls.

Every time a service tech came, he told me I was over-loading the washer. I showed him the size of the loads I was putting in and he said they were fine (way less than the manuf. recs).

When I was shopping for a new washer, I let the salesperson know my biggest complaint about the # of repairs on our previous. They all said that that # of repairs was not unreasonable and that is one reason to get the ext. warr.

They just do not make them like they used to. This irks me to no end, since we are supposed to be all for energy saving appliances, but what about the landfill for these appliances that are being replaced after less than 10 years.

I also have a gripe about appliances breaking down. 6 years ago we bought a top of the line Maytag dishwasher, and we paid top dollar for it too. It broke down last month, and we have been told that it is cheaper to buy another dishwasher, than it is to fix it:sad1: . Goes to show you that it is a disposable society we are living in. We hate to junk it, but there's nothing we can do to fix it, other than throw a crazy amount of money at it. We were told that since Maytag got bought out, the quality went through the floor, and the company that currently owns it is using the Maytag name to sell overpriced, substandard products.:scared1: :scared1:

What does having a warranty expire have anything to do with where you purchase your appliance? Even if you purchased Kenmore, it is not made by Sears. I just don't understand why you think a retailer should provide you free service beyond the warranty of the items they sell.

Well I guess I come from a time when Dept Stores sold products which lasted alittle longer than 17 months ,,yes I was wrong to have not gotten an extended warranty ,,,enough --close the thread --don't need to be blasted for venting ,,I
apologise

Do you remember how much they were charging for extended warranty? By not purchasing it you have that money at your disposal now for the service call. You're basially self-insured. That's the positive spin on it.

Extended warranties are usually wasted money.

mel, you vented about Sears, blaming them for the appliance that only lasted 17 months. I am not a fan of the company but just found your vent misplaced. A number of years back I purchased a Whirlpool fridge that turned into a piece of junk. Repaired it once during warranty and twice after, all 3 times an electronic board kept failing. I didn't blame the retail store, just Whirlpool. I received no satisfaction from the company in what was obviously a faulty product so just don't buy Whirlpool anymore. Blame the manufacturer, not the retailer. BTW, was it Kenmore?

I respectfully disagree. I personally think they can save you a very large amount of money and especially hassle. I've seen no end of people benefit from having the extended warranty we offer. No worries though, I know I'm not going to change your mind and it's really not worth arguing about it. :)

i agree 100%. I bought all Maytag appliances because at one time they were the best. Not anymore. I will never by Maytag again. Washer has been COMPLETELY rebuilt (thank God for the extended warranty), Fridge compressor has died, # service calls on the washing machine (again thank God for the warranty), and the dryer once although the extended spin has never worked. The only thing that works well is my stove.

THese were not cheap appliances either.
