The same John Lasseter making Toy Story 3?
Seriously, I do see your points Michael. Although I will say I like well done sequels. It's nice to revisit characters, and I really like the characters in Enchanted (and Mary Poppins too). I guess what it always comes down to is story. If it's a good story, then it will be a good movie... time will tell.
I agree that it's nice to revisit characters - when there is a story to tell. Your point about Toy Story 3 is well-taken. However, I do believe there is more story to tell because in both films there was an underlying theme of worry among the toys about what would happen when Andy grew up, especially in Toy Story 2 with the introduction of Jessie. I think that is a story worth telling in sequels.
In an earlier post, someone mentioned Disney wanted to make a sequel to Mary Poppins, but couldn't obtain the rights from the author.(And don't worry about bursting my bubble, it's very resilient.) Although I firmly believe the film was not made with a sequel in mind and one should not be made, it was based on a series of books so there are more stories to be told.
This isn't the case with "Enchanted". The film ended with them "living happily ever after". The story was finished. This is a simply a case of greed rather than the producers believing there is more to tell about these characters, and that is what I object to about the sequels.
That being said, will I see an "Enchanted" sequel if it's done well? Absolutely. Yes, I will feed the pig that, in this case, is Disney. Nor does this diminish my appreciation for Disney films and take away the hundreds of hours of joy they have given me and my family. I will always be a Disney fan. I even enjoyed "Home on the Range". If that doesn't make me a die hard Disney animation fan, I don't know what does!
This was a fun discussion!
