OT: Delayed Speech In Two Year Old?

My son was only saying a couple of words at the age of 2. We took him to an audiologist to have his hearing checked and to a speech pathologist for testing. No problems were found. He just started talking one day when he was about 2 1/2 and he hasn't stopped since! The delay in speech did not cause him to have any speech difficulties when he did begin talking.

Has your child been tested for elevated lead levels? There's a distinct pattern between delayed speech and lead poisoning.

One thing you may want to look for is how much you dont make you child talk. With our third child he used probably 4 or 5 words at age 2. We found in our situation his two older siblings would interpret for him so he did not need to talk. Very often as a parent it is easier to just give them what they want because you know what it is as well.

With our 4th who is now 2 we took a different approach made sure the older kids weren't talking for him and made sure he used words. It is like night and day between the two youngest at the same age.

So watch yourself and see if you are speaking for her essentially and not making her learn words, why learn them when she is getting her point across.

Just my thoughts. Best of luck!
