Cooking OT: corned beef and cabbage....

I have the basics for making this, but this year I want to add either beer or beef broth instead of the water to cook it. Anyone try either of these methods? What kind of beer would work best?.....or is the broth method better?

Add 1 bottle of Guiness to your water...corned beef is salty, the beef broth will be overwhelming. Guiness softens it up and gives it a nice flavor....
