What can you tell me about the Silverado area in SW Calgary...

We are house hunting and we found a home we love, but don't know much about the area.

TIA

I don't actually live in Silverado, but I used to live down in Lake Midnapore, not too far from there. Silverado looks like it would be a nice community, as it is very close to almost anything you could want! There is a huge shopping area a few minutes away in Shawnessey, with Walmart, Home Depot, Michaels, Zellers, Superstore, a theatre, Chapters, Linens & Things, Shoppers Drug mart and many, many more stores, and also lots of restaurants to choose from. If you`re looking for a mall nearby, you would just go north on Macleod Trail to Anderson Road and you`ll find Southcenter Mall. If you take Calgary Transit to commute to work, there is a fairly new C-train station in Somerset, just minutes north of Silverado on the other side of Hwy 22x.

Of course being a new community, there are no schools, so children would have to bussed out. The designated public schools for elementary & jr high are in Southwood (Ethel M. Johnson & Harold Panabaker), which is a fair hike from Silverado, and the high school is located in Canyon Meadows (Dr. E.P. Scarlett). The designated schools in Catholic system are a bit closer, with the elem & jr high being in Sundance (Father Whelihan) and the high school being in Shawnessy (Bishop O'Byrne). This website (www dot unitedcommunites dot com, and click on ``amenities``) has some additional info on the designated schools, including French immersion programs & private schools. (sorry, I don`t have enough posts to post the actual link to that site.)

I hope this helps you a little. As I said I don't live in the area anymore, but we still visit often to see old friends & neighbours (and always get in a little shopping while we're there!).

Silverado has a new established section of homes on the east end. The whole remaining subdivision is planned and roads exist. Most of the lots have been released and can be built on. This makes for a very spread out subdivision and where you may not have neighbours for months or years before a street is filled with houses. Kind of a backwards way of building houses but I think they tried to ride the wave of the housing boom a year ago and are now caught with everything available and few buyers.

It is close to all the shopping and restaurants that you need.
As previous poster mentioned, no schools for at least 3 - 5 years minimum.
