OT--bookclub suggestions

The Time Travelers Wife by Audrey Niffennegger , The Lovely Bones By Alice Sebold, The Memory Keepers Daughter (can't remember the author)

We have had a very active bookclub for the past four years. We read a new book about every six weeks. A fun thing to do is to let everyone make a selection that they would like to read and write it on a notecard. Drop all the notecards in a hat and draw for the next read. The purpose of our bookclub is friendship and reading books we might not normally pick up. We've had some great discussions and learned so much about each other. Here's a few of our favorites from the past (not in any particular order):

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch
Night by Elie Wiesel
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt
Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult
Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons by Lorna Landvik
The Memory Keepers Daughter by Kim Edwards
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

The Memory Keepers Daughter (can't remember the author)

I second The Memory Keepers Daughter, by Jodi Picoult...or nearly ANYTHING by this author. She brings a lot of great issues to the forefront in her books, yielding great discussions.

A thousand Splendid Suns , The Other Boleyn Girl, The Birth of Venus, Angry Housewives eating Bon Bons..These were all titles my book club has done.

Some friends & neighbors & I just started a book club -- our first book was Julie & Julia by Julie Powell. Now we are reading The Help by Kathryn Sockett.

Here's a great blog that I read with lots of book reviews:

In addition to the usual book club suggestions, our club does some non-fiction too. We read Anderson Cooper's autobio (Dispatches From the Edge, I think) and Freakanomics. both were very interesting and different.

My book club just finished up reading the time travelers wife. we had terrific conversation after reading this book! we are all going to see the movie this weekend!

My new favorite book that I've been recommending to everyone is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.

It's about the Nazi Occupation of the Guernsey Islands during WWII and how a book club and certain books they read gave these people hope. It sounds depressing as all get out but it's hilariously funny in parts and in other parts, I was sobbing.

I can't recommend it enough.

Just finished Innocent Traitor by Alison Weir. Very good. Its a novel account fo the life of Jane Grey, who assumed the English throne between the reigns of Henry VIII's son, Edward, and Queen Mary (Henry's eldest daughter, aka Bloody Mary). Very interesting account.

Thanks everyone. I was thinking of Angry housewives eating bon bons--which I have already read, but it will be a nice read. I am eagerly looking up some of the other ideas and suggestions. Keep them coming. I love a good book!!!

memoirs of a geisha, The poisonwood bible, The Bean trees,The Friday night Knitting Club,Water for elephants( one of my favs) ,The Alchemist, The Historian( another fav)

My all-time favorite book, Boy's Life by Robert McCammon. It's a cross between a coming-of-age novel and a murder mystery. But really, it's all about the magic of childhood.

I've read most mentioned (I LOVE books), and just read a couple that I think are newer - The Help, and Still Alice - both excellent reads!
