This is COMPLETELY off topic and apologies to the non Aussies on this sub-forum for this thread.
Is anyone watching Junior Masterchef?
If so, did you watch Friday's episode with the National cook along of the Chocolate Self-Saucing Pudding?
I have a family FAVOURITE for chocolate self-saucing pudding. It's a great recipe because I can either cook it in the oven (crispy top) or in the microwave (quicker, softer pudding) depending on how hungry/desperate we are to dig into it. It is a recipe that we've had time and time again (but not too often) and DH, DS and I love it.
DS and I watched the episode last night and we both agreed that it was time for that chocolate self-saucing pudding to make an appearance after dinner tonight.
So, we cooked it together. First time DS has been interested to make this with me!
He's usually just interested in the eating end.
We weighed out the butter and melted it in the microwave.
We added self raising flour, cocoa, sugar, vanilla, milk.....
First hiccough....
"Where's the egg, mum?"
"This recipe doesn't have an egg in it."
"Why not? They had an egg last night. Can we add an egg?"
"Ummm. No. We've already added the milk and if I add an egg, the pudding may not work."
"Can we start over?"
"[DS name]! No! That's a waste of good food."
"Okay. But can we add an egg next time?"
"Okay."
Minor crisis averted.
We mixed it all and then sprinkled the cocoa and brown sugar over the top and poured hot water over it.
Second hiccough.....
"Why didn't we transfer the batter into the smaller bowls?"
"What smaller bowls?"
"You know. The smaller bowls like they used last night." (DS proceeds to go into the cupboards and pulls out the RAMEKIN bowls!!! I had no idea he even knew we had any!)
"We've always made the pudding in this bowl. It's a good bowl. It will go into the oven or the microwave and cook the pudding well."
"But they made it in smaller bowls last night!"
"[DS name]! Next time!"
"Okay. We can add egg and make it in the smaller bowls next time."
I put the whole thing into the microwave...afterall, it was getting late and we need to start the bedtime routine .... soon!
Third hiccough.....
"Why aren't we cooking it in the oven?"
"It's getting late and you need to go to bed soon. Plus I don't wan't you to eat dessert too late, so I'm cooking it in the micro. We've cooked it like this before."
"But that's not how the did it last night"
(I'm counting to 10 ....then 20 .... by this stage.)
"How about we start this earlier next time?"
"Okay."
The pudding comes out of the micro. It smells heavenly...like it always does.
LAST STRAW
"Where are the candied orange peels? They had 6 per bowl last time. We need to make at least 20!"
"EAT YOUR DESSERT OR THERE WON'T BE ANY FOR YOU TONIGHT!!"
And that people is why my perfectly fine previous family favourite of a Chocolate Self-Saucing Pudding is no longer a family favourite (WITH ME!).
*&^&^%$# I now need to download the recipe of last night's Junior Masterchef Chocolate Self Saucing Pudding and use that NEXT TIME!
If you got this far, thanks for reading. I don't really need any responses. I just needed to share.
