Does anyone know if the DLR hotels carry BBC America? BBC America will be airing the Dr. Who Christmas special on Christmas Day (for the very first time actually *on* Christmas in the U.S.) and we'd love to be able to make it part of our holiday celebration ::yes::.

Have no idea, but wanted to thank you for posting this since I had no idea that there would be a Dr. Who special!!

bumping for the night shift.

If you have an internet connection you can always catch it on iPlayer :)

I know this might sound stupid...but how do you do that, the iPlayer thingy? And would we be watching the show 'live'?

Hey, does anyone know how I could find out what the channel line-up is at the 3 Disneyland hotels? Or if there are any 'British' pubs/restaurants in DtD that might carry BBC America? I know this seems crazy, that we will be at DLR at Christmastime and we're thinking about this, but if I could figure out a way for us(especially DD) to see the show it would be *really* cool.

The URL is http://www.bbciplayer.com/ and programs are streamed straight to your internet device - laptop, Wii and so on. It may play items at the same time as the TV counterpart, may play an hour after it.

Just a little bump to see if anyone has some ideas on how to watch the Dr. Who Christmas show on Christmas Day. (And I know we're way behind the curve here, but we actually don't have a DVR.)

We were on a trip (not Disney) when the season 5 finale aired. We checked iTunes and as soon as it was available we downloaded it onto our laptop and watched it. I love Doctor Who!!! iTunes usually has it the next day.

Could you call the:idea: hotel where you'll be staying and ask them?

BBCAmerica is not offered as part of the DLR/DCA hotels channels(like the many other missing cable channels that we have at home & I understand why they do it...Disney Corporate would rather have us at the parks! Spending money!). I asked about online/Internet viewing here on the DIS/DLR forum & a poster mentioned a service called 'boxee', which I'm not familiar with.

I have no idea of how to arrange to see this on the day it airs (we'd rather not watch it on a YouTube screen-capture video kwim). Maybe if anyone has experience with watching as-it-airs BBCA programming on their laptop at DLR (I don't know if it's even possible), that would be the ideal response-post :teeth: .

thanks,

All I have to say is that the DLR Hotels are really poor when it comes to in-room channels and such.

I found that same thing at the WDW hotels, too. Sometime during my huge trip, I just wanted to relax and watch a rented movie like I can do at other resorts. And I couldn't. I had the laptop but didn't want to fuss with it.

Your best bet may be the Slingbox.

http://www.slingbox.com

The whole Slingbox concept sounds so cool, but I think I'd have to have a Slingbox at my home location though, right? There doesn't seem to be a legal way that I could connect to it through the Internet and watch Doctor Who on a laptop...

Sorry? That's precisely what Slingbox is for. You connect it to your cable box's output, and then you can access it from your laptop through the Internet. The program is played on your cable box... you're simply redirecting the video. That's legal for SD under all circumstances and legal for HD whenever HDCP is not enabled.

You know me... If it wasn't legal, I wouldn't post about it.

Agnes, how timely to see this thread pop up. I am another avowed Doctor Who fan and have turned my dad, nieces and nephews onto it as well. In fact, I am hosting a Christmas night sleepover for my nephews so they can watch the show with my dad and I.

I also have Slingbox and know the ropes for online viewing of Doctor Who.

iPlayer is only available people in the UK. There's a region block so anyone outside the UK won't be able to play video. (Next year they are supposed to trial a subscription service for US viewers.) So that is not really an option for you unless you want to look into the realm of proxy servers. (Gets techie so PM if you want details on that.) Keep in mind iPlayer is a catch-up and live streaming service. No programs show up until they air and then they are only available for a few weeks. The live stream will air around 11am California time. The catch-up should be available later in the day.

If you have BBC America on your home cable lineup (it's in limited distribution) then you can setup a Slingbox at home before you leave. It's not really that complicated and once you have it, you can watch anywhere. I setup a Slingbox at home a year ago so we could follow our home football games (and get Fox News) while in Disney. My sibs use it now to watch games and other cable shows they don't get to see.

I expect since BBC America is airing the Christmas special Saturday, the iTunes version will be up for purchase by Sunday.

Hope you get to enjoy it. My nephew fell in love with Matt Smith's series this year. He put Doctor Who toys on his Santa wish list back in July. I am so happy to be giving him his own toybox of action figures and TARDIS. (He played with my collectibles all summer long.)

Oh, did you see the preview clips released this week? Looks to be an awesome special: http://blogtorwho.blogspot.com/2010/12/christmas-carol-four-clips.html

Thanks for the mentions of the Slingbox, wish I had known of it sooner, but I don't think there's time to get one before we leave tomorrow. I'll see if there are any local retail outlets that carry it though ::yes:: .

I think that this is about the only thing that would work. I thought there might be a pub in the Downtown Disney area of Anaheim or some public viewing parties in the area but haven't been able to find anything like that.

If the Slingbox doesn't work out we'll wait for it to pop up on iTunes on the 26th...finally found the Doctor Who page and it will be available on iTunes the day *after* Christmas :teeth: .
