I know this isn't out yet, but has anyone heard if this e-reader is supposed to be good? My mom wants to get one. She's been researching all the different kinds and thinks she likes this one more than the Kindle. Any thoughts?

Quite a bit of contoversy over book readers. You may want to log on to the NY Times web site and search for the subject. I believe they have had a few articles.

Well, I'm a firm believer in getting what what "you" like - not what other people tell you to like.

I personally have a Kindle - I love it

I know Kevin now uses a Kindle and had previously used the Sony reader - he liked both

I would check to see what Barnes & Noble's return policy is going to be for the Nook. If it's reasonable , then i would tell your Mom to get it & try it, as long as she could return it if she isn't happy with it :thumbsup2

I can tell you what I have found from the research I have done.

B&N has a "re-stocking" fee if you buy a Nook and dont like it. Amazon has a 30 day "no questions asked" return policy.

I picked 10 books that I recently purchsed for my Kindle and compared pricing from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. B&N was higher in all 10 instances...sometimes a couple of dollars higher.

B&N is touting that you can lend a book to a friend with a Nook. This can be done once per title. It's good for 14 days. You can not access the book while it is lent and not all books are "lendable".

B&N's Nook has a slot for an SD card. The Kindle holds 1500 books and you have access to Amazon's archive feature, making the Kindle limitless.

B&N is touting the touch screen and finger scroll. This means that your library is visible 4 books at a time and you flick to the next 4. Kindle lists your books at approximately 12 per page. You flip pages to look at your alpabetical listing. You'd have to decide wich is easier.

The nook does not allow you to download books wirelessly. The Kindle does. The Nook must be hooked to a computer to load books unless you are in a B&N store. You can download KIndle books from anywhere.

These are some of the things I found.

All my reserach pointed me to the Kindle.

I would also check out the Sony Reader. There are two models out now. I have not done the level of research on these two as I have with the Nook.

Happy reading.

True, although pricing is fluid. Who know's which way they will go.

Nook has 2GB of internal storage (1500 books worth). The SD can add another 16 GB. The device will be long obsolete by the time you fill it ;). However, the space could be useful if you want to carry your mp3 library. You can't do that on Kindle.

I believe there will be a sub folder system. Check the link below.

Not True. Nook has free 3G wireless via AT&T for buying books. No web browser.

Frankly, I'm not sold on any of the readers yet. Each has it's short comings. Below is a link to the Nook message board. People have been peppering the B&N reps with lots of good questions http://bookclubs.barnesandnoble.com/t5/eBooks-Help-Board/bd-p/eBooks_Help.

Personally, I'm waiting to see what Apple puts out next year. I would much rather put the $300- toward Steve's rumored tablet. I don't have a compelling reason to pony up the asking price for either reader just yet.

The Kindle is a proven product. I would wait and see how B&N does with the Nook before committing good money. My two cents.

Answer from B&N Admin on Nook Board...

You can't put your eBooks into "folders" or tags at this time, but we've heard the request, and we're looking into it for down the road.[/QUOTE]

True, although pricing is fluid. Who know's which way they will go.

Customers have not actually held a Nook in their hands. Delieveries have been delayed.

I dont know what will happen down the line with pricing, but once you buy a Nook...you're going to want to buy books. Pick 10 books that interest you and check both sites.. I believe you will find Amazon less expensive

Not True. Nook has free 3G wireless via AT&T for buying books. No web browser.

This is true. I mis-spoke. The Sony Reader does not have wireless coverage. The Nook does not have the web browser that Kindle has.

I have owned the Sony Reader and the Kindle. Both have done what I wanted them to do at the time.

They offer a solution to the question "where do I store all these books?". They offer the ability to carry your entire library with you. They offer the opportunity to make every book a large print book They offer the opprtuinity to buy books at 1:00am and have them in seconds.

Are they for everyone? Nope.

Some people dont need an iPod or a computer either.

I was very happy with my Sony until the font wasnt big enough and now I'm very happy with my Kindle.

One thing about the Nook and the Sony Reader....you can see them in person eventually. You must order the Kindle from Amazon.

I have been doing some research on book readers because we're thinking of getting my mom one for Christmas. I've pretty much eliminated the Nook and Kindle is winning the race over Sony. On the Nook, I'm wary because it is new, Kindle is mainly tested and seemingly most kinks/glitches worked out. Also I'm not a big fan of B&N, they are typically more expensive, their website isn't as user friendly and I don't have as much confidence of them really backing the development of the Nook like Amazon has done in Kindle. I have far greater confidence in Amazon and like them better overall as a company over B&N. We will probably be going with the Kindle.
