OT: Babies crawling with shorts on?

This is way OT, but I'm wondering what others do with babies that are crawling in the Summer. Do you put your babies in shorts and if so are their knees ok?

I am just concerned they'll hurt themselves, but also don't want them to be too hot.

Thanks! Can you tell I'm a first time Mom ::)

they'll figure it out. :) My DD would wear dresses sometimes when she was crawling, but her knees would get stuck. She decided pretty quickly that it was easier to "walk" on her hands and feet, then keep dealing with the dress. I would also start out by putting them down on a blanket, but we all know how that goes. They might also sit in a small pool or a sandbox for long periods of time.

All of my kids figured something out. Either they learned to walk over the summer or they walk on all fours. A little scratch on the knees didn't bother any of them.

an easier way than them figuring it out on there own is to cut of the top of you DH's tube socks, about 3 inches or 4 inches down from top edge. (you know, the ones with the holes in the toes) and put the part you cut off up the babies leg and over the knee. It's not to hot and it will keep it softer down there. In the grass, I wouldn't worry about it.

DS had no trouble with it. But DD has really sensitive skin, so her knees started to get really rashy and rough. Sometimes we use tube socks, like a PP suggested but we also bought a few pair of "Baby Legs" (http://babylegs.net) which I thought were super cute (if a bit of a splurge).
One of my friends also suggested putting Aquafor on her knees to protect from rugburn. That worked well on DD's elbows (she kinda did a combo army crawl of sorts) but wasn't enough for the knees.

I guess I was one of the lucky ones...my DS went from crawling to walking to running in the space of a week (then again, maybe I wasn't so lucky). I didn't worry so much about it...kids'll get bumped and scratched no matter what. Just stock up on band-aids and neosporin...::yes::

when DS was 12mo he decided to crawl on his hands and feet outside instead of his knees, then after a 2 months of that he gave in and started walking.

Not sure there is much difference between their hands and their knees, both will be on the floor/ground. Unless they are crawling around stones and things I wouldn't let it concern you.

Plenty of other first time things to worry about. ;)

Outside or inside? Inside don't worry about it outside put down a blanket or something unless on concrete then I would just hold them (I think....)

Muahaha... maybe this is incentive to get DD to walk! I don't think she'll like crawling around outside, she's used to nice soft carpet :P

I wouldn't let them crawl on cement but anything else should be fine. Ds walked at 9 months - only crawled long enough to scuff his Stride Rites. Dd crawled longer - didn't walk until 11.5 months but the surfaces didn't seem to bother her - and we have rough commercial grade carpet in our living room.

One of mine scooted on her butt and never crawled, do you know how many pairs of pants/shorts she wore out??? The other 2 didn't seem to care about their knees with shorts on..

DS had longer shorts that covered his knees. Even when they didn't he didn't really seem to mind, all the wincing and groaning was coming from me!

Another idea is to get a large 'beachball' or plastic ball that you get at the grocery store or Walmart. DS likes to use these as his walker while he's outside. And even if he falls he uses it to stand back up.

DS was a late walker, and crawled outside all summer!! Even concrete didn't bother him!! He still likes to crawl around outside when he's playng and it still doesn't bother him!! He is wearing alot of longer shorts this year though!

Target has something to the babylegs too.

While I wouldn't let them him crawl on concrete, he will be fine in shorts. You have such a long road ahead of you with bruises, scrapes, cuts, etc that you (and your DS) should start to toughen up now! A little ****oo is OK! ;)

My kiddo just crawls around in shorts. I let him crawl wherever and if the texture bothers him, he pops up onto his hands and feet. Usually, it doesn't bother him one bit and he's never had a skinned knee from crawling.
