I am working on my early childhood education degree and for one of my education classes I need to have a fun idea or topic to structure a lesson plan around. Anyone have anything fun and/or creative that was a big hit in your classroom? Thanks in advance!!

I have my ECE degree and am teaching Kindergarten. So far, the kids have LOVED our 100 day celebration...We had them bring in 100 items to share with the class, made 100 day placemats, 100 day hats, did a writing on "what i would do with 100 dollars"--they had a blast

I did a recent lesson on non-standard units for measurement. I teach a split grade one/two. We pretended we were zookeepers and had to feed the longest snake first. They each had blackline masters with three different curvy snakes, they had to choose something to measure them with and record their measurements. Then we returned to the carpet to share our strategies and order the snakes from longest to shortest

Dr. Seuss, dinosaurs, and 5 senses always goes over well. I can help you with more details if you would like..

Cooking is always fun (pudding, pudding pie, sandwiches...absically anything you don't need a stove/micro for). It can incorporate math, letters (sounds of the ingredients), reading (recipes for the more advanced or older students), writing (writing the recipes on index cards for older students),sharing/cooperation, turntaking, order (1st do this, next, then). It also leads to teaching to the modalities because it is hands-on. Cooking can lead to lessons in science too...milk comes from cows, flour comes from wheat, chocolate comes from bean, etc. The best part of the lesson is you get to eat at the end...and I've found sharing with the principal never hurts :)

Thank you all for the great suggestions!! I have some great ideas to take to class now for my final exam. :goodvibes

I am an education major also and I am finishing my degree with a kindergarten class.
A girl in my class last year (we simulate our lessons) did sequencing with the chicken dance. First we flap what did we do second? then third? etc.

It was cute, a class ranging from 21-40 yr olds loved so I am sure the kiddos will.

The teacher I am currently working with is going to have the children do pudding paint. they will each get some pudding and a paint brush and practice their letters....and eat a little too. Naturally you would have to ask permission from whatever district you are in to do this as everyone's policy with food in the classroom is different and you would have to make sure no one has food allergies.
