We are considering renting an RV for a weeklong trip...not sure where to go yet though! We just like the idea of the "family experience"...(you know, the getting lost, sibling battles, overall misery;))

Anyway...I'm wondering if anyone has ever rented an RV and how the experience was for you? Is there somewhere you'd recommend to rent from? Some of the online places seem very expensive.

Where did you go in the RV? AND, would you do it again?

TIA!:goodvibes

We used to camp all of the time when I was growing up and we loved it. Now that I have a family of my own, I thought it would be fun to do the same thing that you are talking about. I'm interested to see what others say about this.

By the way, have you ever watched the movie RV? It is hilarious! :rotfl2:

I too have wanted to do this. I hate cartips but somehow the RV appeals to me. I guess because I could walk around and it is more like a moving house?:confused3:laughing: I looked into renting a big one for a trip and it was so expensive. I think for 2 weeks it was over $2000. Of course you also had to gas it up. This was for the big ones that are probably the length of a tourbus.

Glad I'm not the only one considering the insanity! :thumbsup2:hug:

I have seen the movie and it is hilarious. That would totally be us too!! (Especially my DH taking out the mailbox and the trash cans etc!)

I hate car trips too. I think it must be the novelty of the whole idea...It does seem very expensive to me also. Then gas and a place to park at the end of the day...:scared1: Hoping someone has some good ideas to lower the cost!

We bought our first camper, a fifth wheel, 2 summers ago and haven't regretted it for a minute. We love it. Our oldest 2 boys, ages 20 and 18--they aren't into it, but the younger 2 are. We typically camp within 40 minutes of our house so we can still get away, but still be close if the older boys need us and if they aren't working, they come and join us for dinner and swimming. I would recommend you get on the RV.Net site---I belong on there as well and you can ask as many questions as you want about renting, where to go, etc. Everyone (okay, mostly everyone) there is really helpful and if you decide to rent and have a question while on the road, or camping, log on and ask. I have had many questions answered while we were beginners and even still we have questions. I see a lot of Cruise America RV's on the road and at our favorite campground. One of our local RV dealers also have a few rental RV's, so you might want to check with any local RV dealerships if you have any nearby. I swore I would never go camping and now I wish we could go every weekend. I don't know about the cost difference between a typical hotel stay where you pay for meals and gas to get there AND a rental rv trip where you pay to rent the rv--maybe mileage and gas. On an rv trip you will be buying your own food (for the most part) and whether you stay in a hotel or rent an rv, you still have to pay for gas. For us, taking the RV camping is a lot cheaper than getting a hotel for several nights and eating out, but we own our camper. I hope you decide to rent a camper---I would recommend the experience for just about everyone!

Wanted to add----think about renting a Class C RV over the "bus" kind. The Class C has a bed over the cab of the truck and there is usually a bed in the back and the table and couches will become beds.

My dad rented an RV for the family to go visit family almost 4 years ago. My DH and I had a 3 week old baby and Dad wanted us to be comfortable for the trip. It was great! One of the best road trips I have ever been on. We had one with a bed over the cab and another bed in the back. We were able to sit at the table and play cards, read, etc. I would highly recommend it. I think it was right around $2000 for maybe 10 days. The gas wasn't all that bad as it was diesel fuel. The only thing my dad complained about was emptying the 'Black' tank...toilet water. My dad, who hasn't had anything bigger to drive than a hyundai had no problems with it. Maybe backing it into campround sites...but who wouldn't. One last thing, we got it from a local dealer here...so maybe check out local RV dealers by you.

We have been camping since my youngest ds was an infant, he is 22 yrs now. He doesnt go with us very much, but my dd and dgd1 go with us all the time. we have a class c motorhome. We usually stay within 2 hours of home but we have traveled from Pa to cedar point, kings island in ohio, kings dominion in virginia, new york, myrtle beach, charleston Sc, charlotte Nc and of course disneys fort wilderness. I love to travel this way and prefer this over flying anywhere.

Can I ask a stupid question? What's a fifth wheel?

It sounds like you've had a lot of fun....makes it tempting! Thanks for the website!

a 5th wheel is a camper that attaches to a special attachment in the bed of a pick up truck vs a traditional camper that has a hitch connection to the back of the car.

I guess you can tell by my user name that my family loooves to camp, we've never regretted buying our camper. the best family time ever. I'm not sure what area you are looking to camp but here is a link to a guy that rents a pop up and fifth wheel. he will even deliver and set up and break it down and pick it back up. great way ti try out camping to make sure you like it before investing lots of money.
