As the title of this thread suggests, my 12 week old lil princess: has taken to chewing on her whole hand. She won't really suck on just a thumb or a finger, but it's the whole shootin' match. Is this possibly teething or is it a symptom of something else?

Thanks in advance

Nawwww she is just being an adorable baby :) Some babies do it when they are teething, some just because it's there.

Enjoy that precious bundle of joy.:thumbsup2

It's probably not teething. It probably just feels/tastes good to her. My DD did it too and she didn't get her first tooth until about 7 or 8 months. Just take lots of pictures so you'll remember these little things.

Yup, perfectly normal behavior. She might be teething; some babies teeth for a very long time before the teeth start actually showing. or she may just be sucking her hand to explore it. That is what they do, they put EVERYTHING in their mouths and their hands are easily accessible.

My 13 week DS is doing this too! I think it is teething - our ped. says babies can probably feel the discomfort of teeth pushing through the gums for a long while before they actually cut through.

It's very common for babies to do this.

It could be a way of calming and comforting herself, a sign of hunger, or just another way for her to explore her new discovery... her beautiful hands.

When my oldest daughter was about 3 months, she would hold her hand out and just lovingly gaze at it, as if she had a diamond on every finger. Oh how I miss having a baby around... she's 27 now, and the youngest is 7.

:) This post made me smile... My youngest did this all the time as an infant. She used to stare at her fist... eventually she would get it to her cheek... and finally she would make it into her mouth and she was so happy! It was just something she did. I don't know if this is related, but she is now 2 and still has to put EVERYTHING in her mouth. Of course, she still hasn't cut her back molars so that might be why. Enjoy and take lots of pictures. So cute! :goodvibes

Trust me, I'm taking hundreds of pictures. Those 2 and 4 gig memory sticks don't take long to fill up.

Thanks to all who've had a kind word to say. I was really kinda worried that it wasn't normal.

Perfectly normal, and so cute! :cloud9: She may have just discovered her hand and is fascinated by it, she maybe teething, she may be an oral soother (as most kids are at some point) and this calms her, she may be hungry. She is most certainly normal! :goodvibes

It could be worse, my daughter used to chew on here feet! She managed to get just about the whole thing in her mouth, which of course scared me to death because I thought she was going to choke on it! I just went with it, I figured it was more sanitary than her thumb or hands because she was not walking yet. She will be 6 in 2 months and I love looking back at this pics and she does too! Take lots of pictures! They will be priceless!

My ds did this too. I was absolutely NOT going to use a pacifier...... yeah that was kid #1, when of course I knew all the answers! :lmao:

I ended up giving him a pacifier instead - the theory being I could take the pacifier away - but I couldn't really get rid of his hand. :lmao:
