We will be in the World from November 18-26 (I'm so excited I can hardly stand it!!) I just noticed that it states that Osborne Family Lights are open from 6-8 PM - is that true, even on Extended Magic Hours?? I had hoped to go later, when the crowds thinned out! :santa:

The Osborne Lights attraction presented an unusual
problem for MGM.
When they were "acquired" by Disney from the Osborne
family (not OZZIE, BTW) there was a huge amount of
national publicity about them.
Disney got a lot of "mileage" out of having them and
they needed to DISPLAY them for lots of guests to see
(after dark).
But...
Even in the winter months, it simply does not get
really DARK in Florida until about 6pm.
So the lights can't be properly viewed until that
time.
(They simply are NOT a daytime or even "regular hours"
attraction).
And the MGM park usually closes (except EMH) only an
hour or so after dark.

Since Disney spends a major (MAJOR) amount of time and
money to set-up, promote, fund the electricity and
CM's and (after the holidays) remove and store these
hundreds of thousands of lights, they needed a way
that guests could actually VIEW them.
(Otherwise, what's the POINT?)

So since, at sunset, MOST (up to 10,000) guests in MGM
are SITTING IN THE FANTASMIC! THEATER and can't SEE
the lights as it gets dark... AFTER the show, the CM's
actually ENCOURAGE the exiting crowds from Fantasmic!
to go over and see the Osborne Lights.
Even though the rest of the park is closed, the lights
are in full glory, and there are even some concessions
open for refreshments.

The info that keeps getting posted (same one or two
posters, by the way) that says guests were stopped
from going to see the OLights after Fantasmic! is
accurate as well.
There are some nights when the OLights are being used
for a private "event" and regular guests are not
allowed in.
You simply will not KNOW about this unless you stop at
Guest Relations that day and ask if the OLights will
be available after Fantasmic!

As for how late?
If Fantasmic! is at 7pm, then its over at 7:25pm, most
guests are out of the theater by 7:50pm and headed to
the Osborne Lights.
I'd estimate that they would keep the OLights open for
a hour-plus, so, say 9:15pm-9:45pm would be the
approx. wrap-up.

On EMH nights, the OLights will be open to viewing when the park is still open to guests.

To the OP, we will be there that time frame too, and plan on going to MGM to see the O.lights on Monday the 20th, since MGM is open til 11pm for EMH.

Our MGM day is 11/22, but I was planning on doing OLights after Fantasmic. Since 11/20 is my "open day", maybe we'll swing by and see them then.

I'd hate to wait until the 22nd, only to find out I can't see them after Fantasmic!

To be SURE... that's a good plan.

I am really glad to hear the information about Spectacle of Lights for November 20th - according to the Disney World website, the lights are only available until 8:00, and it doesn't mention anything about them being extended during the Extra Magic Hours. I was hoping!! :thumbsup2

Just my .02 but I don't think it's fair to everyone to close OLights due to a private event. There are many people who plan their trips around the parks at night. Since the lights are only there for a very limited date AND time, I think it is very greedy of WDW to sell this as a venue for private events.

OK rant over!

The lights are a must see if you are there.

He didn't say the lights are closed to paying guests on those nights, he said the lights are closed at closing time on those nights and do not stay open later than the time posted. I think it would be an awesome place to have a holiday corporate event!

Oh.....well, never mind

Hello! My husband and I are going next week and have the same question about Osborne Lights staying on during EMH. What happened when you all were there in November??

Hope your trips were magical!!

Thanks,
K

They don't turn them off.
They are a major "draw" all nights even past closing time.

If the park is open for EMH, the lights will be in full operation.

Actually, they run until 9pm :) We were told this by an upper management CM the night we were there. We had just come out of Rockin Rollercoaster at about 7:50, and she told us to head on over.. that they were open until 9pm "unadvertised" :)

If you're not interested in standing in a HUGE line to see Fantasmic, hit the Osborne Lights around 6:30 pm.. It's great! No crowds and you can leisurely walk around.. :thumbsup2

DD9 and I are headed to MGM on Thursday evening to see the Lights again. It was the day after Thanksgiving when we first saw them this year, and I NEED to see them once again. I'm hoping maybe Thursdays crowd might be a little lighter!

It is probably my MOST favorite holiday event at Disney. "Tradition" (4 holiday seasons worth of tradition) has us viewing them for the first time each year the day after Thanksgiving while my sister is visiting, it starts out the holiday season for Tara and I! This year I just stood in awe watching and listening - it just never gets old

We just got back. Saw them Sunday night also saw them last year. We liked them better this year with them dancing. Last year they were pretty but just there. Sorta of like we could have stayed home and drove around just to look at xmas lights. Where this year we were like cool this is what we expect from Disney.
