I'm curious about something I saw last week while in Orlando. When driving down the highway I saw numerous backyards with what we in the midwest would call a screened-in porch. However, they are not built so large here. The screened-in areas sometimes seemed to encompass the whole back yard, but most were the width of the back of the house. Is this just something that is popular in Orlando, or is there a particulare reason why the screened-in areas on most homes are so large?

We stayed at a house in Palm Coast that had a big screened in porch. The insects in the evening were awful, so I believe this is the best way for them to enjoy the outdoors.

I'm going to spell this wrong but I think they are called La'nais and usually they have a pool in them.

A lanai is an outdoor dinning area and a term borrowed from the Polynesian culture. I agree with Amid that I think a lot of these have pools inside them in Florida.

They are all over Florida...were in No. Fl...don't have a pool but have the Lanai....I love it!...The bugs are so awful out here you need to be able to spend some time out side! LOL

and she said....when most people would want to enjoy the outdoors ....at night time.....the bugs would carry them off...plus those big critters can't get in either....blahhhhh.....

I live in Michigan and what I wouldn't give to have one of those in the summer. The mosquitos are so bad, after about 6 o'clock we can't even be in our pool.

It's either a Florida room or the poolis screened in. There are all over Florida. I have a small one on the side of my house. We can sit out in the evening without the bugs carry us off to the Everglades.

Coming from Minnesota, we were also intrigued by the idea of sreening in our back yard! However, I don't think I'm ready to get rid of our trees and I bet the first six inch snow would take down the screen!

My parents don't have a pool and live in VA
but they have a smaller version of the screened porch
only way to enjoy sitting out past dusk due to bugs
My mom had bugs bites so bad & they got infected on the back of her calf it was rather ugly

Isn't a Florida room glassed in , not screened in? In all the houses I've looked at renting, the FL rooms have been actual rooms with large windows rather than porches with screens.

Can be either. The original Florida rooms were screened in but newer ones are glassed in. Depends on the owner. Mine is screened and off the family room.
