I know this question has probably been posted before, but I coudn't find anything in my search.

Has anyone ever flown into Orlando Sanford Airport? I found a really great deal on airfare, but the airline flies out of a small airport here in St. Louis, and it flies into Orlando Sanford.

Our plans are to fly in the day before (friday) and stay at a hotel in the Orlando area, then take DCL ground trasport to the port the next morning.

So my question is...Is this a teeny tiny airport? Will there be hotel shuttles to/from the airport?

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give!

Hi, we flew into Sanford last September, and last February. IT definitely is the smallest airport I have seen. I think it has something like 12 gates. We loved it, nice staff, clean, and quick.

We stayed near Orlando airport, but we had a car service. In my research there were no hotels with Shuttles to Sanford. We shuttled back to MCO with the free hotel shuttle to there the morning of the cruise.

Thanks so much for your info, Mommasita.
Just one more question. About how far is Sanford from MCO and all of the airport hotels? (Do you think it would be a really expensive cab ride from Sanford to a hotel near MCO?)

Thanks so much for your help. :flower: If I can get this worked out, I'll be saving quite a bit on airfare! :cool1: (enough for quite a few Konk Coolers!!! :drinking1

ChrizJen...Here are a couple threads about this same subject from the Transportation forum. We too are thinking of using TMA for our sept. trip.

Also, you might check out www.dcltribute.com for his airport info as to distance and maps from sanford to the port and orlando/wdw. Also, the airport website has links for transportation options.

Hope this helps! Let us know what you decide.

We only live 30 miles from Mid America airport and are looking into flying from there this summer. $160 r/t compared to over $300 from AA. There are rental cars available at Sanford, and we have already reserved one. I visited Mid america last Thursday to observe and was very impressed. Free parking and no crowds. The plane looked nice, it was a Boeing 727 I think. Boarding went very smooth and the plane left on time.

I have never flown into Sanford, but have driven from Sanford to the port many times (my DILs live in Sanford so we go there to visit, then to the port). Look at the map on Dave's site - dcltribute.com - it shows how to get from Sanford airport to the port. You can see that it is one side of the triangle to go from Sanford to the port and a very easy drive. I would go into Orlando only if there is something you want to do. It is actually out of the way (you end up doing two sides of a triangle).
Myself, I would rent a car at the Sanford airport and drive straight to Cape Canaveral and to the beach (if you are doing an overnight), then to the port, or straight to the port. There are rental car agencies at the Sanford airport. The airport has a site online also to get an idea of its layout. There may be cab service to the port and could be cheaper than a cab going into Orlando and using Disney transportation.

Thanks for your replies. And thanks, vossjemi, for the links to other threads. I think the good reports from other travellers are enough to convince me to go ahead with TMA out of Mid America. :)

Here's the problem that we're facing. We've already booked the DCL transfers to and from the port. So if we can get from Sanford to a hotel with shuttles to MCO, we'll be good to go. That way we can just take the hotel shuttle to MCO on cruise day to get on the DCL bus. (uggh...I feel like I'm not making any sense...LOL. Am I making sense?!?!) :confused3

Anyhow, thanks for your comments and suggestions! Very helpful as usual!

OH! And vossjemi...looks like you're leaving on Wonder the day after we leave on Magic!!! How exciting! :Pinkbounc :bounce:

Southwest is now booking through August and AA has matched fares. The fare from STL to Orlando have dropped from over $300 to arround $260. When we take into account an extra night stay, extra meals, and the higher rental car cost it is about even for us. The only problem I had with TMA and leaving on Friday was what would happen if the flight got cancelled? We would have to start driving to make the ship.

Hi, it is about 45 min from Sanford to the Port, so I would figure around 30 to MCO. YEs, it is unfortunately a distance. I wish I could say that you should not have any problems finding a shuttle, but I think you will. You know you could cancel your disney transfers, and see about a car service. Maybe a bit more, but if you taxi from Sanford to an airport hotel, it will more than likely add up to more.

Good Luck in your choice.

Hi. We just did the same thing you are talking about in January. We usually drive to Orlando so it was really different for us to fly. We love Mid-America because it is so small. You think Sanford is small---Mid America only has 2 gates! But the good thing is it is only your airplane there. I felt much more comfortable with our 4 kids going thru small airports then larger ones. Plus the fact that we had delayed flights coming and going it was much easier in the small airport. Both times were weather delays but it was a bit frustrating. It still took all day to get to FL even though it is a short 2 hour flight. You still have to be at the airport 2 hours ahead of time. I thought that was silly but there is still bunces of security---my DD6 had to take off her shoes and I just wanted to be checked in and ready for the plane. So when we drove 15 minutes to the aiport to find out it was delayed 2 hours---uuuugh. I knew the kids would never understand going home so we drove to MC's in Lebanon and let them play in the play land for awhile. TMA even served pizzas to everyone that was waiting--and soda and bottled water. I thought that was nice but then we ddidn't get a meal on the plane going down. Sanford was really nice. Only mistake I made was on the return trip I put my kids' plastic, I repeat plastic, Pirates of the Carribbean gun into his backpack because Daddy had already loaded the luggage in the car, it was pouring rain, I was doing a last walk-thru the hotel room and didn't think anything of it. Well, I managed to shut down their security system for a bit. I must have scard them good. My hubby was a bit mad at me but I really didn't think it was a big deal. Silly me. I guess real guns can be made of all sorts of things. But it was a really nice airport---they still let me fly home!!

Any questions, just ask. We were very happy with TMA. Only thing I was disappointed in was the pricing structure on their reservations. Long story. Have fun!

I grew up in Sanford, and my mom still lives there! Getting from Sanford to MCO (the Orlando airport) is much easier than it used to be, because they now have a toll road (the "greeneway") that makes it a straight shot. It takes about 30 minutes. I doubt that they have a real "shuttle service," but maybe you could call one of the limo companies and see how much they'd charge for a one way van trip from Sanford to Orlando?

Just a comment---we've never done DCL transport before but I thought one benefit was they take you direct from airport to ship--don't have to worry about seeing your luggage etc. But if you are already staying the night at a hotel you will have your luggage. If you just rent a car at Sanford---we did that and it was SO close and SO easy, then you could drive to the hotel and drive to the ship and get there when you want to---not when DCL buses take you. Don't know about the rental car costs but it may be about the same as taking the DCL bus.

Well, we've talked it over, and I think we are just going to rent a car or a van once we get to Sanford. That will eliminate all the problems. Thank you all for all of your advice. You've been a great help!

We've flown into Sanford twice and honestly - -it is breath of fresh air over MCO which is so LARGE. It is very easy to get in and out of. We rented a car each time for our drive into Orlando. It was very easy.

Good, now don't forget to cancel your transfers with DCL (use that money for your car rental!!)

AA and SWA have just dropped their fares from STL to MCO.
It is now $226.90 r/t

Well, just when I thought I'd gotten it all figured out! LOL
This stuff could drive a girl nuts!!! :rotfl:

Christal- The good thing is we still have plenty of time to sit back and see what happens. I, for one, am interested in Mid-America because it is less drive for me and the navigating the smaller airports sounds good. But I am not as confident that TMA can get us to our destination without problems as SWA can due to the fact that they are newer and smaller. I am definatly keeping a close eye on this deal.

Yeah, we'll just have to watch and wait, and have a plan in place for whichever option ends up being best. Looks like it will work out one way or another though. :flower:

This will be the first time we actually fly to Orlando. We just drove from STL all the way to Cocoa Beach last time, and drove back. I'm just looking forward to not having that 18+ hour drive!!! (Not to mention that accident we got into on the way back home in the rental car!! :headache:  :faint: )

Sanford International is located roughly 30 miles NE from Orlando proper. It is a converted military air base. With that in mind, it was designed to accomidate "heavy" aircraft. Heavy is a term used to refer to aircraft over 300,000 lbs in general. A dual isle aircraft (ex. 767, 777, A300, A330 and A340) is a heavy aircraft. They require longer and wider runways and taxiways and more space between gates (Jetways or loading bridges) to accomidate the wing span.
Sanford, while limited to gate space, is a gateway for many international flights to central florida. It offers spacous modern board lounges, restrooms and great food courts.
Now while there are many ups there are a few downs. Those of you traveling to northern cities may experience longer delays due to weather in your destination cities. Why? There are little to zero alternative destination options out of Sanford. In other words...if you fly airline XYZ to say Syracuse (SYR) and there is weather in SYR, there are no other flights or airlines to cities near by. For example SYR could be closed but Albany and Rochester are open for arriving flights.
If your aircraft has a maintance delay, you cannot simply change airlines or get rebooked on another flight. Airlines serving Sanford have limited service to domestic destinations and when they have 2 or 3 flights a day to a city, it may be flown by the same aircraft all day. Two round trip flights a day, an AM and PM flight, could be the same aircraft going back and fourth. So, if you are delayed you could get on an evening flight but remember that that evening flight has passengers already booked on it and may be full. It then becomes a problem to transfer passengers to Orlando International. Also, does your airline have an agreement with other airlines at Orlando International to carrier their passengers during irregular operations? If so, Plan on a 2 - 3 hour delay in waiting for a bus to pick up and your fellow travelers up in Sanford, unload the luggage from the aircraft, load it in to the bus or rented cargo truck, find all the passengers and their children and make your way to Orlando International (MCO).
The airlines serving Sanford do offer great rates. Some of the best you will find but there are reasons for it. It is a secondary airport, lower landing and gate fees and other operational costs. That is because they are trying to attract passengers to less desired Sanford International.
Are you staying in the Orlando Internation Drive/Disney area?
Well there are two ways to get there. One is the 417 toll road or GREENWAY. It is the GREENWAY in my mind because it takes a lot of GREEN from your wallet to get from one end to another. Now, depending on what exit you get off at, you can pay $5 - $7.50 in tolls. IMPORTANT: When you get down close to the Disney area, you will need exact change to get through the toll both. There are no attendants at many of them. So have quarters ready. Keep in mind though that the price is worth it. It is a direct shot to Disney.
I-4. Here is your second choice from Sanford. I-4, AKA Orlando's cheapest place to park, can be a nightmare between 7 - 9 AM and 3 - 7 PM. Mulitpule areas of road expansion projects and make this trip a 2 - 2.5 hour experience. If you like playing the out of state license plate game, road kill BINGO (thanks to the Jersey barriers preventing animals from getting across the highway and trapping them in the middle), who can hold their bladder the longest or chatting with strangers in the cars next to you, this is your road!
If you have a choice and the airfare is only $20 - $40 different between the two airports, chose Orlando International.
Many fares may look better. Example: $199 compared to $215. It is only $16 different but you will have many more options if anything happens and less road travel distance to cover. Let's face it, the kids have been on a plane for 3 hours and adding a 2 hour drive could test your limits and ruin your vacation.
If you have any questions about Orlando, feel free to contact me. :cool1:
