I hope this helps us to understand how Memorial Day came to be .

Origin And Birthplace Of Memorial Day

On May 5, 1868, the Grand Army of the Republic established Memorial Day or Decoration Day as the national day to decorate the graves of the Civil War soldiers with flowers. Major General John A. Logan appointed May 30 as the day to be observed. Arlington National Cemetery had the first observance of the day on a grand scale. The place was appropriate as it already housed graves of over 20,000 Union dead and several hundred Confederate dead. Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant presided the meeting and the center point of these Memorial Day ceremonies was the mourning-draped veranda of the Arlington mansion. Speeches were followed by a march of soldiers' children and orphans and members of the GAR through the cemetery strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves. They also recited prayers and sang hymns for the dead.

Even before this declaration, local observances for these war dead were being held at various places. In Columbus, Miss., a group of women visited a cemetery on April 25 1866, to decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers and the Union soldiers whop fell at the battle of Siloh. Many cities in the North and the South claim to be the first to celebrate Memorial Day in 1866 but Congress and President Lyndon Johnson officially declared Waterloo in New York as the 'birthplace' of Memorial Day in 1966. It was said that on May 5, 1866, a ceremony was held here to honor local soldiers and sailors who fought in the Civil War, businesses were closed for the day and residents furled flags at half-mast. It was said to be the first formal, community-wide and regular event.

In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by the Congress, who designated the last Monday in May as the day for its observance.

Memorial day helps us to remember all those w e have lost thru our history, protecting our freedoms .

As we camp at Fort Wilderness this holiday , or camp in your own back yard, please remember, our freedoms come at the highest possible price that can be paid.

And don't forget to fly your American flag! We seem to be the only one in our neighborhood who does.

I hope this helps us to understand how Memorial Day came to be .

This day is to honor and remember those who gave the ultimate for our freedom and our flag. God bless them all.

As a proud Navy Vet, my flag will not touch the ground, for any reason!!!

Just makes me wonder why it is that bitter people never start their own threads. :confused3

Darrel, thank you for your service, it is very much appreciated.

American is based upon free speech which is what our service men/women should be fighting for. Therefore, if we want to protest the misuse of the armed forces by our government that is our right. America would be better served by using our military to protect our borders and not to settle the disputes of other countries.

Honor a vet ANYday. Thanks to all of you, here and beyond.

Frank, thanks for starting this thread.

distech, It is not honorable to disrespect the flag or those who have fought or are fighting for us, whether you agree with the mission or not.

God Bless the USA!

I don't agree with Unkle Sam all the time but to put O Glory on the ground just cuz you don't like someone in Washington really sucks.

Thanks and even being a long time military family (dad was a 30 yr USAF gent, me 20 yrs. Navy and our only two sons are currently on active duty as Naval Avaitors) I never knew all the background. Probably I just glossed over it to some extent so I and my family has always been so close to the military, but now after being a civilian for over 21 years I'm starting to appreciate more of what I took for granted I guess when I was in uniform.

I'll stay out of the politics except to say I will also never let my flag that flys 24/7 hit the ground and find other ways to protest what I don't like, but having living and served on active duty during the Vietnam Conflict (War), my faith in the American people as a whole warms my heart over how we now treat our service members who are only doing their duty as they promised.

God Bless all who have served and especially those that "gave it all" and just as much thanks goes to those spouses, etc. that stayed behind and kept the fort going so to speak. DW thanked me this Memorial Day and I thanked her for being there when I wasn't and gave her probably 75% credit for how great our two sons turned out.

Larry
