Ordering at sit down meals with DDP?

If one or two of us decide on just an appetizer and dessert, do we have to point that out when ordering? Or when the bill comes will they just deduct the actual meals ordered from the dining plan and charge us for the non meal plan items?

The server will probably point it out to you when you order.

The server asks if you are on a dining plan when you're first seated. If you decide to mix credits and OOP I would let the server know when you're ordering or at least before s/he brings the bill. That way they'll bring both bills (dining plan and OOP) with the correct items on each.

be sure to let them know what you intend to do at that point and they will prepare the bill that way.

Do you have the free dining or are you paying for it? If it's free then order the entree and leave whatever you don't want to eat. It's very wasteful to pay for the plan and then order stuff to buy OOP.

It's only wasteful if you don't use up all your credits by the end of the trip. Maybe they have a two credit meal planned and are thinking of ways to stretch the rest of the credits.

We have the free DDP. I have one "extra" meal booked so will pay OOP for one. Our last meal is breakfast at TH which happens to be the cheapest to pay OOP for. But I'm hoping we have one or two credits left. In looking at the menus I just like the apps better than some of the meals... so that's where my question stems from.
Now I have another question. If I do order an app as my meal, if
I ask will they bring it out with the entrees?

Of course they will! You can do this at any restaurant anywhere. I often order just an appetizer and a drink and say "this will be my meal" Enjoy whatever you decide to eat!!

Some of the restaurants that are not operated by Disney will not allow you to order an appetizer instead of an entree when you are paying with a dining credit. It has to do with how they are reimbursed by Disney for the dining credit. Makes them unable to ring up one item and serve you something else.

I "think" the OP was asking about items that she knows are not included in the dining plan and will be ordering & paying for them. If that is the case you can order whatever you want and it will show up on the bill. Similar to the way alcohol is treated.

Yes! Exactly. That's exactly what I would want to do! Can't see ordering a meal "just because" that I won't eat. Thank you!
