Well, this may be the triumph of hope over experience, but I have today ordered an Canon SX1IS.
When Canon were updating the S5IS they did so in two flavours. Both had the 28-560mm equivalent zoom. The SX10IS, with a conventional CCD sensor, is available just now.
The SX1 has the same lens and the same 10Mpixels, but has got a CMOS sensor that allows it to record 1080p HD video. I've hummed and hawed about it many times, but if this camera does live up to its promises it seems a great vacation camera. Small sensor cameras can do well when you've got bright sunny weather, it's got a phenomenal zoom range, good quality IS, it's compatible with the Canon flashgun I already have and it takes HD video.
Mind you, that HD video fills SD cards at quite a rate
The camera doesn't get introduced into the UK until the first week of December. I should get it a day or two after that. I'll let you know how it works out.
regards,
/alan
