We'll be staying at the All-star sports, can we go to the Poly or the Grand Floridian restaurants and just order desserts, just to get a taste of the place?

Sure. You might want to avoid going during prime dinner hour, but you can order anything you like. One of my favorite things to do is go to Raglan Road and order the bread pudding and watch the band. :goodvibes

As Peg said I'd avoid peak dining times.

Keep in mind that Citrico's and Narcooses have dress codes, and unless it's really slow I'm not sure they'd seat you for "just dessert" in those restaurants. But you should be fine at the Kona Cafe and GF Cafe.

As other posters have already mentioned, you definitely can go to the Kona Cafe and/or Grand Floridian Cafe and order only desserts; in fact, 7 years ago we were staying at the Grand Floridian and decided to go to the Kona Cafe for dinner because I had seen pictures of a specific dessert offered there (I saw the pictures of "Koko puffs" here on the DIS. lol), and once we got to the Polynesian resort my entire family immediately loved the feel of the place, decided we'd stay THERE on our next family trip, and now that's our favorite Disney resort. :sunny:

A lot of people take the time to go explore the other resorts, to try the restaurants or lounges (bars). It's especially a fun thing to do if you have a rainy day and want to do something indoors.

I'd recommend making an ADR for the evening when you want to do this because, depending on when you go, they could be booked solid for the night.

How about just ordering a dessert to go?

Typically, Disney table service restaurants are not "to go" places. You can get your leftovers to go, obviously, but it's not like at Chili's or Applebees. with their express pickups.

We did a dessert only at the Brown Derby just to be in there. We went mid-afternoon when it wasn't crowded. It was still a $25 check so I didn't feel like we were taking advantage.

Last year I wanted dessert to go from Kona and the hostess was really rude to my husband and basically said no. I went back, spoke to the manager and asked why they wouldn't want to take my money? She said the hostess was mistaken and immediately got my dessert, which was to die for!!

We were staying at the Poly at the time and it wasn't a busy time for Kona, they had tons of empty tables.

I would try it and maybe enjoy your dessert on the beach while watching the fireworks.
