Orange Stinger closes tomorrow..

I would rather see them throw that money at developing or creating another attraction altogether, all this "revamping" of the same ride to look like something at a County Fair does very little for my excitement level.

Bigger fish to fry than tinkering with a marginal attraction like the Orange.

I agree. But clearly money is an issue here. At least it seems clear to me.

I am not sure if it's because I am just older and notice things more or if it's because I work in entertainment now as an adult and am constantly torn between budget and creative desires. BUT I notice more and more the very easy ability to peak behind the curtain and see where areas like CA have cut corners. Even on a ride like Mullholand Madness or Mickey's Fun Wheel, where you can see the dirty tires spinning around with rusty chains wrapped around them or the cheap bolted on vehicle driving signs stuck to the walls...it just feels cheap and you expect more theming and care for a Disney park. I notice this alot more with CA but I still see some of it at Magic Kingdom that I am stunned they have not fixed (i.e. how hard is it to paint the ceiling in It's A Small World so it looks like the sky dome at the Forum Ships At Ceasar's Palace in Vegas versus it looking like you are floating thru a warehouse)?

I really enjoy the swings, and am happy they are getting some love and attention. In that concept art is the bottom section just supposed to be WOC viewing, or is it the queue?

Jackoman, Where did this info come from?

I was looking at updates on MousePlanet and MiceChat, and it said that. I thought it was closing on the 27th, but I think they changed it.

Thrilled it's going away. I live in California and have never understood the idea of a theme park meant to emulate the very state that you are already in (as a resident or a tourist). It's sort of like having the Haunted Mansion ride inside a mansion that was already haunted. Ok, stupid analogy but you get my drift, I imagine :rotfl:

I also think the idea that the original theme of California Adventure would somehow be as engaging for folks as the classic Disney creations- and the new Disney/Pixar creations- laughable at best and downright 'reasons for Disney stockholders to revolt' at worst.

When I come to a park called DISNEYland, I want Disney stuff...or at least imaginative, creative stuff (i.e. Star Wars and Indy are a fine fit in my opinion). So I am thrilled the swings are going to emulate The Band Concert.
And I constantly look at the big, color map of the new CA in the current D23 issue and long for the day when I can enter the park and the current makeover will be done...and I never have to think about Pizza Ooh Mow Mow or Mullholland Madness or the Orange Stinger again :lmao:

And yet...... some of love these rides!! I loved the big orange, and I am sutre the new makeover will be just as nice, I hope so I hated the sun painting on screaming they just did. But you know lots of folks do love mulhauland etc.;)

I used to go to POP and I lived in SoCal and never thought of it having to represent NJ. There were some lame rides for some and fun for others. This is CA not Disneyland. I would suggest that to keep from being bummed, stay over in Disneyland. To each their own!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I would actually suggesting saying that to folks who dig the current CA given that it's clearly being significantly rethemed to reflect more classic Disney/Pixar lore.

What is POP, by the way?

That is my thought exactly. They are also doing Mullholland with a Goofy theme, I think. When you get to the bottom of it all you see the ground and some weeds. They could have put something more interesting to look at down there. That is what I expect out of a Disney ride no matter where it is.

I'm more looking forward to the new things like the WOC, Mermaid, and Cars. I never went on those swings. I like TOT and Screamin, but that one looks too scary.

Me thinks you just go to often and the magic is some how tainted. things change, things move forward and they are building new rides and trying to get DCA to look better. but if you always look for the bad in it I think you need to take time to go else where and enjoy other parks or scenery . To many of us, we see the wonder, the magic, to you things are tainted and sad...... try not ruining it for others, :)

Are you serious? I take my kids ALL THE TIME because the park is 'magical'. For them and for me. But the reality is, there are things they could be doing better given that the name Disney equals quality and the epitome of showmanship. I don't think the folks who actually work at the park would disagree. Heck, Walt himself reportedly had an obsession with trying to make the park better and better...he called it 'plussing' and would always try to find ways to make the park even MORE magical.

Also, I never said things were tainted and sad, did I? I don't think I'd spend as much time or money on DLR if I felt that way about it.

Me thinks some folks on these boards tend to be a touch too sensitive when it comes to having ANYTHING to say about the parks that are not 100% positive. I don't call that magic, I call that delusion.

Here is a short explanation.

Pacific Ocean Park was a twenty-eight acre (110,000 m²), nautical-themed amusement park built on a pier at Santa Monica, California which was intended to compete with Disneyland. "And Disneyland and POP is worth a trip to L.A." is a line from the Beach Boys' song "Amusement Parks U.S.A. (from their 1965 album Summer Days (and Summer Nights!!).
"POP," as it was soon nicknamed and pronounced, "pee-oh-pee" was a joint venture between CBS and Santa Anita Park. It opened on Saturday, July 28, 1958 with an attendance figure of 20,000. The next day, the park drew 37,262 which handily outperformed Disneyland's attendance figure that same day. Admission was ninety cents for adults which included access to the park and certain exhibits. The term "POP" was also used as a clever acronym for "Pay One Price", though other rides and attractions were on a pay-as-you-go basis.
Like Disneyland, Pacific Ocean Park found corporate sponsors to share the expenses of some of the exhibits. Six of the pier's original attractions were incorporated into the new park: The Sea Serpent roller coaster, the antique Looff carousel, the Toonerville Fun House, the Glass House, twin diving bells and much more.

Oh ok, thanks for that. I used to live a few blocks from the Pier in Santa Monica. I just never heard it referred to as POP! Fun place for sure!

It was a great place to go to get away for the day. Disney is put a Billion + to change things, so all the SoCal naysayors may be happy with some of the changes. If it weren't for us tourist who like lame rides, OC would be a big waste land. Look what happened to the property prices.
For some reason I missed the Pixar issue. Did Disney just buy Pixar recently??

Jack

Well sure, and to each his/her own. If you dig the theme, I'm sorry for you that it is- to a large extent- being phased out.

But it's actually called Disney's California Adventure and I think most folks expect a Disney vibed park. Heck, I imagine before too long, both parks will just morph into a single park. Altho Disney will need to find a way to charge for both parks at that point.

But the whole thing does have me thinking: why did they scrap the plan for a west coast Epcot to begin with?

Spidey

Yup to each his own and I totally disagree with you. DCA does have Disney themed stuff in it, there's the whole Bug's World there, CA Screamin' which had the Mickey Head that you looped thru and the whole Brother Bear area. There was a lot of "Disney" in DCA already, they don't need to change the whole thing. Besides, the addition of CARSLAND adds a whole lot of Disney to the park....

I call that last statement unnecessary....sheesh....I go all the time too and I'm not delusional about Disney. I know why they are making the changes I just don't agree with them, it won't stop me from going but I won't stop giving my opinions on it either. I don't think that both parks need to be all Disney, I think it's good to have variety and to showcase our state as well. On this we will have to agree to disagree because I definitely feel that DCA was not intended to be another DL, it was supposed to be it's own park with it's own style.

Disney and Pixar have worked together for years, I think they combined officially a few years ago but can't say for sure. I do know that Pixar's offices are in Emeryville, which is very close to my DBF's place of employment. :)

I'll miss the Orange but look forward to the new ride. Though it does look like every other big swing ride at any carnival/Knott's (not knocking Knott's either-love it for what it is).

Either way I'll ride it and enjoy it. I'm just a big kid! :goodvibes And now that DD9 likes (and is tall enough) we can ride it together.

Too bad the orange is leaving but at least we got a few PP with it recently.

I have a friend, Jon Berg who works for ILM and he took me to the Pixar studios back in 2006. What a truely facinating experience. Much like my visit to WDS back in 1961.
You are right but Disney purchased Pixar in Jan of 2006. They even put Steve Jobs on the combined board and they have worked with each other for along time. I just hate to see so much Pixar stuff all together. You might as well call it Pixar Playland. I love how it varies it just needs some more oooomph not related to the little people.

Oh I'm jealous Jack!!!! I'd love to tour Pixar!!! A lot of people do refer to DCA as pixarland.....I wonder why...LOL

I absolutely love technology and at the same time the old standards of animation that Uncle Walt insisted upon. Pixar seems to have both those qualities along with the people that I met that have the love to produce a product that they can be proud of. I spent about 8 hours there and my mind was boggled.
