options for using points for WDW and cruise

we just bought into the DVC in Jan--already have the first trip planned for next Jan--we used points from this yr 100 and 100 that we would get in Aug leaving us 57 points left

next yr were also doing a cruise to find out the points for a cruise arent that high--for the mediterrian low season its 308 we like the balcony I know next yr it will cost more points--wont it or do they stay the same? one extra question anyways were thinking of switching to BLT at the 7 month mark for a savings of around 48 points so now we have 105 plus aug of 2017 points for a total of 205

now the main question what are my options for the extra 100 or so points--

do I buy the extra points just for this trip--right now were not interested in upping our yearly points

or can we just pay cash for the rest and if so how do they figure out what we owe in cash

any other options to think about would be great also

actaully any tips on the DVC would be very helpful

Rent out your points and use the cash to pay for your cruise.

Remember that the points listed on the cruise charts are PER PERSON, not per cabin. The 2017 charts aren't out yet, but the least expensive cabin for 2016 (7 nights MEDITERRANEAN in regular season for 2 people) would be 406 points. The balcony cabin would be 616 for that cruise.

My best guess is that the point requirements for 2017 will be more than they are for 2016.

To book through MS, you would have to pay points for at least the first person in the cabin. There is a cash price for additional passengers in that same cabin if you don't want to pay points for them. The cash would be due when you make the reservation.

First question, did you buy your points directly from DVC and not through resale?
If bought resale they are not eligible for use on a DCL.
As PP stated, the price on the points charts are per person and the first person booked into the room must be paid in full on points. The other people booked into the room can be on points or cash. The cash portion must be paid in full at the time of booking and it is NOT the rate seen on the DCL web site.
Only MS (they will be acting as your TA) can book a DCL using points and the $95 charge will be paid by CC at the time of booking.

And that 616 points for two people in a cabin is why we always say "rent the points and pay cash." If you have 616 points, or even 308 points to pay the first person, renting them at$10/point (which is less than an agency pays for premium points in an 11 month window) is $3080. Compare that, plus the $95 fee, to what it would cost to book the cruise cash via DCL -- I'm seeing low season PP rates of roughly $1700. In other words, if you rent premium resort points at $11.30/point (David's standard payout), you can buy BOTH persons into the stateroom with the $3480 you net on 308 points. If you book two people into the stateroom at 616 points, you're effectively paying 4x the going rate.

(I know some argue that if they weren't using the points anyway, why not, but, honestly, renting the points and then paying cash is still an obvious win in that situation.)

You will find no benefit to booking with points.

I would suggest you look at the cash prices and compare. Not to discuss the points vs cash in general but since you're doing one on points and one on cash it's generally cheaper to do one with 2 on points alternating with a cash option than to do 1 each method. Just look to see. I realize that the number of points available may limit this option.

I did for the times I did one on each. With the $95.00 fee I was within $200.00 either way and I had the points to do one, so I went that way.
Before someone comes back at me about renting the points, I will never rent my points; I do not like the inherent possible problem(s) involved in renting and will not take that chance.

I would point out that there are risk to renting AND risks to using points. IMO the risks are higher using points compared to renting done appropriately but each individual has to make their own decision. As you get short notice the risks of cash and using points converge. The reality is it's often a several thousand dollar difference all points vs renting the same number of points, As long as one understands that difference, their choice. The reality is that points have an inherent value that's market based.
