I was looking forward to Oprah's show today with J.K. Rowling in Scotland. About 5 minutes into the interview Oprah opens Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows to the Epilogue and reads what my DS says is important to the ending.

For HP fans and purists who either haven't read the book yet, are trying to finish the book before the movie release (such as in my case), or are just waiting for the movie and want to be surprised this was a very disapointing situation.

Fortunately I recognized what was happening quickly and stuck my fingers in my ears while chanting "na, na, na" like a goof so I couldn't hear the TV. DS jumped up and changed the channel immediately. I was a bit surprised that Oprah did this as she usually will just read excerpts from various sections of a book but not the end.

I was disappointed as well. I also noticed that JKR was having trouble getting a word in edgewise. I rarely watch O. I watched this episode to hear JKJ, not O blather on and on!

I haven't watched it yet, but it's on my Tivo. I'm surprised she did this. It must have been a pretty powerful passage for her to select it.

I've never read a Harry Potter book and I found the discussion fascinating.

I thought it an intelligent, emotional and heartfelt conversation.

It also struck me that Oprah might be the only woman on the planet that might understand the aspects of success that J.K Rowling has had.

There are not many female billionaires.

I thought they both came off very well.

I thought it was a very interesting. JK seemed very relaxed and I thought it was an informative conversation. And it's been a couple years since the release of the book so I think most people have read it or know the ending.

The younger kids don't necessarily watch Oprah.

Kevin? Dare I say it? Harry Potter as the new book club selection? :)

I'm almost done watching it now and thought that reading was very relevant to their conversation. I think it's been such a great interview so far. And I agree with a PP that the book is not new, it's been out for quite a while. I don't think she did anything wrong reading it. If someone was purposely waiting for the movie to come out, maybe they should've skipped the Oprah show or just hit mute while she was reading :confused3

If reading that passage was relevant to the interview then I get it. However, I can't possibly be the only one who is currently reading this book but I do realize that most have already read it a couple years ago when it was released.

As far as younger kids not watching Oprah I do agree with kbelle8995.

All I can say is from what I was told, had I actually heard what she read and not covered my ears It would have ruined the rest of the book for me or if I chose to not finish the book and just see the final two films it would have had an influence on that final film.

I am glad that the majority of you enjoyed the interview. I did feel considering O's love of reading that she really was the perfect person to do this interview with J.K. Rowling.

I too found the interview very inspiring! What an experience to watch two successful women!

I had to comment though because I instantly thought of Pete when they mentioned that there was even "an amusement park" that was Harry Potter themed and when they discussed it during the merchandising conversation. I could hear him saying, "it is not a theme park!!!!"

Yes, reading the end of that book would certainly give away the ending ... I know that sounds snarky but I don't mean it to! I am very glad that you were able to tune it out and that the final book wasn't ruined for you. I adore these books and I re-read them often but if I had heard the ending before I had read it, I would have been peeved! :goodvibes

I watched the full show over the weekend and agree. I didn't see anything wrong with her reading the ending of the book and I thought she could relate to Rowling very well. I thought they had a great discussion and didn't feel as if Oprah was impeding it in any way (as mentioned by another poster). :thumbsup2
